What A Player! Guardiola praises Man City star’s display against Leeds United

Pep Guardiola hailed a “huge victory” after Manchester City ground out a hard-fought 1-0 success, insisting his side showed their maturity and focus at a crucial stage of the campaign.

The City manager reserved special praise for Rodri, who he believes is steadily rediscovering the standards that have made him one of the most influential midfielders in Europe.

“Rodri, what a player,” Guardiola said after the game.

“We missed him for a long, long time and now step by step he’s coming back to his best.”

City’s narrow win ensured they kept the pressure on Arsenal at the summit, trimming the gap to two points before their rivals’ meeting with Chelsea.

At this stage of the season, Guardiola acknowledged, results are as significant as performances.

Rodri’s influence was evident in the way City dictated large spells of possession. Calm in tight areas and authoritative in his positioning, the Spain international provided the platform for his team to gradually assert control after a testing start.

Guardiola has frequently spoken about the midfielder’s importance to the side’s rhythm and balance. His absence earlier in the season was keenly felt, but this latest display suggested he is edging closer to peak condition.

City’s task was made more complicated by the absence of their leading striker, with injury ruling out their usual focal point in attack. Yet Guardiola felt the collective effort compensated for the missing firepower.

“It was,” he said when asked if it was difficult to win without the striker. “Erling is a massively important player for us.”

The visitors began on the back foot, unsettled by Leeds’ energy and aggressive pressing. Guardiola admitted his side were slow to find their usual composure.

“If you ask me about the game, we didn’t start well. Leeds are always so intense.”

For a spell, City struggled to impose themselves. Leeds harried high up the pitch, forcing hurried passes and limiting space between the lines. But gradually, Guardiola’s players reverted to the principles that have underpinned their success over the past decade.

“After that we did what we are good at for the last decade we are together. A thousand million passes, make the vibe of the crowd a little bit more calm and let them run and run.”

The tactic was familiar: circulate the ball patiently, stretch the opposition and sap their energy. While chances were initially limited, City’s persistence began to tell as the first half wore on.

Guardiola conceded there was a lack of sharpness in the final third during the early exchanges.

“But we missed a bit of intention up front to make more movements but when they had more fatigue in the last 15 or 20 minutes (of the first half), we start to pass the ball to try to score a goal. We got it at the end of the first half.”

That breakthrough shifted the momentum. With the lead secured, City entered the second period determined not to relinquish control.

Guardiola noted that his side have occasionally retreated too deeply after the interval in previous matches, inviting unnecessary pressure.

“In the second half we always drop but it didn’t happen today. We were incredibly focused in all departments.”

Guardiola was particularly pleased with the defensive resolve displayed in the closing stages, when Leeds pushed forward in search of an equaliser.

“We defended really well and it was a huge victory for us.”
