Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has strongly defended his tactical and selection decisions after his side suffered a heavy 3–0 defeat against Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium.
City travelled to Spain widely regarded as favourites to progress from the tie, but the evening quickly turned against them as Madrid produced a ruthless first-half display.
Guardiola’s starting lineup, which featured three wingers supporting striker Erling Haaland, surprised many supporters before kick-off.
Despite early attacking promise, the Sky Blues were unable to convert their forward play into goals, while Madrid punished defensive lapses with clinical finishing. A hat-trick of first-half strikes from captain Federico Valverde left the visitors with a mountain to climb.
Although Guardiola made several adjustments as the game progressed, City were unable to alter the outcome.
Nevertheless, the manager insisted after the match that his approach had been justified and that his team had created the opportunities needed to compete.
Guardiola defends attacking approach despite defeat
The selection of multiple wide players drew attention ahead of kick-off, as it appeared to move away from the tactical systems that had guided City successfully through much of the season.
However, Guardiola explained that the strategy was designed to stretch Madrid’s defence and create one-on-one opportunities on the flanks.
City began brightly, particularly through Jérémy Doku on the left wing, whose pace and direct running troubled the hosts early on. Yet while Guardiola’s side showed attacking intent, they struggled to contain Madrid’s transitions and defensive organisation.

Valverde’s clinical finishing turned the contest firmly in Madrid’s favour before the break, leaving City trailing despite having enjoyed several promising attacking moments.
Guardiola responded at half-time by introducing midfielder Tijjani Reijnders in place of winger Savinho in an attempt to add control in midfield.
Later changes also brought Rayan Cherki, Rayan Aït-Nouri and Omar Marmoush into the contest.
However, the changes were unable to shift the momentum of the match, with Madrid holding firm defensively to secure the three-goal victory.
Despite the disappointing scoreline, Guardiola argued that City’s attacking structure had allowed them to reach dangerous areas repeatedly.
“No, not many changes,” he said. “More changes at Newcastle, in the last games most of the players played. I wanted them aggressive on the outside one against one. Jeremy was outstanding, and we struggled a bit more on the right.
“We arrived many times to have the sense that we could score a goal and try to see what happened in the second, but they arrived three times and scored three goals.
“We arrived in the final third many times – it was a dream – but before the ball came in those moments. They adjusted, they put five in the back, and sometimes transitions was good and sometimes not, Real Madrid are a good quality team with good quality players and we couldn’t score the goal that we needed.”
Guardiola was also questioned about whether his lineup had reduced City’s balance, particularly in terms of defensive protection and midfield coverage. Critics suggested the changes may have left the side exposed against Madrid’s quick attackers.
The City manager rejected that suggestion and insisted that the structure had been carefully planned to deal with Madrid’s strengths.
One specific decision involved deploying Nico O’Reilly in a defensive role. Guardiola said the adjustment was aimed at limiting the influence of Madrid forward Vinícius Júnior, who frequently attacks from wide areas.
Guardiola stressed that most of the team structure remained consistent with previous matches and pointed to recent squad rotation as evidence that his tactical flexibility had worked successfully in other games.

“How many times has Nico O’Reilly played left back this season? How many times? The only adjustment was Khusanov in that areas because Vinicius arrives in those areas and you have to control that,” he said.
“The rest? Wingers were injured for two months, and they played incredible – Savinho at Newcastle and Jeremy was an incredible threat here.
“People arrived with Bernardo Silva and Rodri, we covered runners with Nico and Antoine. That was the idea. I did rotation in Newcastle with 10 different players and it was fine, so understand what I’m saying.
“Part of this was for wingers to try to drop them and people in the middle in pockets to arrive close to the box, control to the striker and second striker with experienced, fast players in behind.”
Players such as Bernardo Silva and Rodri were expected to provide support through the middle of the pitch, while the wingers would stretch Madrid’s defence and create space for central runners.
Ultimately, though, City were unable to find the breakthrough they required, while Madrid’s precision in front of goal proved decisive.
