Manchester City will look to quickly recover from their European disappointment when they return to Premier League action against West Ham United this weekend.
Pep Guardiola’s side endured a difficult night in Spain during the week, suffering a heavy 3-0 defeat to Real Madrid in the Champions League.
The result leaves City with a huge task ahead of the second leg at the Etihad Stadium and has raised questions about how the manager will respond with his team selection in the coming days.
For now, however, the focus shifts back to domestic matters. City are currently chasing the Premier League leaders and cannot afford further slip-ups.
Their most recent league outing ended in a 2-2 draw with Nottingham Forest, a result that left them seven points behind Arsenal at the top of the table. With the title race entering a crucial phase, Guardiola’s side will be keen to return to winning ways.
The City manager may decide to freshen up his side following the disappointing display at the Santiago Bernabeu. During that match, Guardiola made one change at the break, introducing Tijjani Reijnders for Savinho as he attempted to alter the flow of the contest.
Antoine Semenyo was handed a starting role as a roaming No.10 in what was his Champions League debut, but his involvement lasted just over an hour before he was replaced by Rayan Cherki.
The substitution reflected Guardiola’s search for more creativity and attacking spark as City attempted to respond to Madrid’s dominance.
Predicted lineup and tactical outlook
Guardiola is expected to rotate parts of his starting XI as he balances the demands of domestic and European competition.
In goal, Gianluigi Donnarumma is widely tipped to start between the posts for the trip to the London Stadium. The Italian international could provide a fresh presence at the back as City aim to regain defensive stability after conceding three goals in midweek.
Defensively, changes are also likely. Matheus Nunes and Rayan Aït-Nouri could both return to the starting lineup after beginning the Real Madrid clash on the bench. Their energy and pace may offer City additional width and defensive security against West Ham’s counter-attacking threat.
At centre-back, Guardiola may choose to pair John Stones with Ruben Dias. The duo have often been trusted in important matches and could be preferred on this occasion, particularly if the manager wishes to rest Marc Guehi and Abdukodir Khusanov ahead of next week’s decisive Champions League encounter.
In midfield, there is a possibility that Rodri will be given a break. Nico Gonzalez could step into the holding role to anchor the middle of the pitch, allowing the Spanish international time to recover before the return leg against Real Madrid.
Alongside Gonzalez, Tijjani Reijnders is likely to feature after his appearance from the bench in Spain. Phil Foden could complete the midfield trio, providing creativity and forward movement as City attempt to control possession and break down West Ham’s defence.
Further forward, Guardiola may also opt for changes in the attacking line. Omar Marmoush is expected to lead the attack and could be supported by Rayan Cherki and Jeremy Doku on the flanks.
Both players bring pace and direct dribbling, qualities that could be crucial against a West Ham side known for its physical defensive approach.

Erling Haaland, meanwhile, might be rested from the start as Guardiola manages his minutes ahead of the Champions League clash. The Norwegian striker could instead be introduced later in the match if City require additional firepower.
Injury latest ahead of West Ham clash
City’s injury list remains relatively short, though several players are still unavailable.
Mateo Kovacic has been sidelined but has recently returned to training, raising hopes that he could soon rejoin the squad in the coming weeks.
Josko Gvardiol is also out, and while his exact return date remains uncertain, there are suggestions he could make a comeback before the end of the season.
Rico Lewis is another concern after picking up an ankle problem. The issue is not believed to be long-term, but the defender is unlikely to be risked unless he proves fully fit before the match.
Despite those absences, Guardiola still has plenty of options at his disposal as City attempt to regain momentum in the Premier League title race.
