Pep Guardiola cut a frustrated figure after learning he will serve a two-match touchline suspension following his latest booking during Manchester City’s FA Cup victory against Newcastle United on Saturday.
The City manager was cautioned during the heated encounter at St James’ Park after confronting the fourth official, Lewis Smith.
Guardiola’s reaction came moments after a challenge from Kieran Trippier on City winger Jeremy Doku sparked anger on the visiting bench.
Under disciplinary rules introduced this season across the Premier League, managers face increasing punishment for repeated bookings. A third caution results in a one-match suspension, while a sixth yellow card triggers a two-game ban.
Guardiola’s booking against Newcastle was his sixth of the campaign, automatically activating the sanction. As a result, he will be forced to watch two upcoming domestic matches away from the touchline.
Despite the suspension, the timing of the ban means Guardiola will still be allowed to take charge from the sideline when City meet Arsenal in the Carabao Cup Final on 22 March.
The competition’s showpiece is exempt from the disciplinary rule, and European fixtures are also unaffected.
Instead, Guardiola will miss City’s next league match against West Ham United and the club’s forthcoming FA Cup quarter-final tie.
The last-eight draw in the FA Cup has yet to be finalised, but Guardiola will be absent from the dugout regardless of the opponent.
The Spaniard, who has been in charge at Manchester City for nearly a decade, reacted to the situation with a mix of sarcasm and exasperation after the game.
Guardiola questions decision after heated touchline moment
Speaking afterwards, Guardiola did little to hide his disbelief at the decision and the punishment that followed.
“I will tell you something – we have all the records in this country, all of them, despite everything.”
The remark carried a hint of irony as Guardiola continued to reflect on the situation and the accumulation of bookings that have led to his suspension.
“We have the record of the manager with the most yellow cards. I want all records and now I have it, two-game ban now and I will go on holidays the next two games.”
While Guardiola’s tone suggested humour, his comments also pointed to a deeper frustration at what he views as inconsistent officiating.

The City manager insisted his reaction was motivated by loyalty to his players rather than a desire to challenge officials.
“There are things after 10 years I cannot understand. Review the action. Of course I’m going to defend Doku and all my teams.”
Since arriving in England in 2016, Guardiola has overseen one of the most successful periods in Manchester City’s history. Multiple league titles, domestic cups and European triumphs have followed, turning the club into a dominant force both domestically and internationally.
His intense approach on the touchline has long been part of that success. Guardiola is known for constant communication with players during matches, frequently moving to the edge of the technical area to offer tactical instructions.
For the next two domestic games, however, those duties will fall to his coaching staff while the manager watches from the stands.
