Chelsea 0-3 Man City: Guardiola reveals what he told Rayan Cherki before the victory

Pep Guardiola has lifted the lid on a key conversation with Rayan Cherki before Manchester City’s emphatic win over Chelsea, a result that has intensified the Premier League title race.

City delivered a commanding second-half performance at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, securing a 3-0 victory that reverberated across the division, particularly for Arsenal, whose title ambitions have come under renewed pressure.

After a relatively balanced opening period, Guardiola’s side shifted gears after the interval, overwhelming their hosts with precision, movement and clinical finishing.

Goals from Nico O’Reilly, Marc Guehi and Jérémy Doku sealed a result that cuts the gap at the summit to six points.

The timing of the win could hardly have been more significant. Arsenal’s unexpected defeat at home to Bournemouth a day earlier had opened the door, and City stepped through it with authority.

Attention now turns to a potentially decisive clash between the top two at the Etihad Stadium next week, coming shortly after City’s convincing triumph over the same opponents in the Carabao Cup final.

Guardiola’s message to Cherki

In the aftermath of the victory, Guardiola offered insight into his pre-match instructions to Cherki, underlining both the player’s ability and the expectations placed upon him within City’s attacking structure.

“Rayan Cherki is an extraordinary talent. The problem from Rayan, and we talk a lot, is sometimes he plays in a position close to [Gianluigi] Donnarumma. Your talent has to be in the final third!”

Guardiola’s remarks highlight a recurring theme in his coaching philosophy: maximising attacking output by ensuring creative players operate in areas where they can influence decisive moments.

In Cherki’s case, the emphasis is on positioning and impact rather than involvement in deeper phases of play.

The Manchester City manager expanded further on what he expects from the young forward, making it clear that effectiveness in advanced areas is paramount.

“How good you are; winning games, assists, things that nobody can see, not even from the outside – so be there! Be close to [Erling] Haaland, the wingers, make your quality there, we’ll bring the ball to you. It’s not necessary to come down”

By encouraging Cherki to remain high up the pitch, Guardiola is aiming to sharpen City’s attacking edge.

With players such as Erling Haaland leading the line and dynamic wingers stretching opposition defences, Cherki’s presence in the final third could prove crucial in unlocking tightly organised teams.

Rather than dropping deep to collect possession, Cherki is being urged to trust the system — allowing the team’s build-up play to supply him in areas where he can do the most damage.

Sustaining success at the highest level

Beyond the specifics of Cherki’s role, Guardiola also reflected on the foundations of City’s sustained dominance over recent years.

His comments offered a glimpse into the mindset that has underpinned one of the most successful periods in the club’s history.

“One of the secrets we’ve had as a club, organisation is after success, success, success, we were humble enough or calm enough to say, ‘OK what do we have to do to continue being up there’.

“That is the most difficult thing. Winning once or twice, it’s OK. But during nine years, being there all the time except last season, that defines the whole structure.”

The ability to consistently compete at the highest level requires more than talent; it demands constant evolution, self-assessment and a willingness to adapt.

City’s performance at Stamford Bridge served as another example of that ethos in action.

Despite the pressures of a demanding season and the emergence of strong rivals, they showed no signs of complacency.

Instead, they displayed the hunger and focus that have become hallmarks of Guardiola’s tenure.

The upcoming meeting with Arsenal now looms large, with the potential to shape the outcome of the title race.

City’s recent form suggests they are gathering momentum at a crucial stage, while their opponents will be looking to respond after a setback.
