Rodri exposes what he discovered about Arsenal at Wembley

Rodri believes Manchester City may have uncovered a decisive edge over Arsenal in the race for the Premier League title, following their composed victory in the Carabao Cup final.

At Wembley Stadium on Sunday, Pep Guardiola’s side secured their first major silverware of the campaign with a controlled 2-0 success, delivering both a statement performance and a timely morale boost.

The result came in the wake of disappointment in Europe, where City were recently knocked out of the UEFA Champions League, and amid a slight wobble in domestic form that had seen them drop points in consecutive league outings.

Despite still trailing Arsenal in the standings, City have now injected renewed belief into their title defence. With a game in hand and momentum shifting subtly, this victory could yet prove to be a pivotal moment in the closing months of the season.

City seize control after tactical adjustment

The contest itself began as a closely fought affair, with both sides matching each other in intensity and organisation during the first half.

Arsenal, under Mikel Arteta, looked composed and disciplined, while City probed patiently without creating clear openings.

However, the balance shifted decisively after the interval. Guardiola’s men emerged sharper, quicker in their passing, and more assertive in their pressing.

The breakthrough soon followed, as two rapid strikes from Nico O’Reilly shortly after the hour mark turned a tight contest into a commanding lead.

Rodri, who once again anchored City’s midfield with authority, played a central role in dictating the tempo. His positioning, distribution, and defensive awareness disrupted Arsenal’s rhythm, gradually tilting the game in City’s favour.

Reflecting on the turning point, Rodri revealed that the team sensed vulnerability in their opponents even before the goals arrived.

Speaking after the match, he explained how Pep Guardiola’s message at half-time helped sharpen City’s approach.

“I think it was good a reassuring chat that we were doing things very well.

“We adjusted a few things because I think we were doing very well in terms of pressing. It was more a question of personality and wanting to go for the game and not letting them off.

“They dropped off a bit physically and we detected it. We wanted to go for it and in the end you can tell when you get players in the area and you have that desire to score and Nico has shown the potential he is going to have.”

Those observations underlined City’s ability to read the flow of the game and respond with precision. While Arsenal had competed strongly early on, the physical dip highlighted by Rodri proved costly. City capitalised ruthlessly, demonstrating the experience and depth that have defined their recent dominance.

Title race implications and renewed belief

Beyond the immediate reward of lifting the trophy, the victory may carry broader implications for the title race.

Arsenal have been widely viewed as frontrunners, chasing their first league crown in over two decades, but this defeat raises questions about how they will respond under sustained pressure.

For City, the win serves not only as silverware but also as psychological reinforcement. Having faced setbacks in recent weeks, Guardiola’s squad now appear refocused and energised for the challenges ahead.

Rodri suggested that beating a team in strong form was particularly significant, both in terms of confidence and message to their rivals.

“We knew today was a very important match, not only because of what the title means but also because of what it means to beat the team in best form.

“It’s a game not only for this title but to show that we can beat them. There’s still a long way to go and it’s clear we didn’t want to get off the Champions League train.

“We’ve been eliminated but we have to look at the positive side that we have more time to prepare for the matches.

“That’s an incentive to take into account and we’ll fight until the end.”
