Rico Lewis Tells Guardiola Where He Likes To Play After Extending Contract

Manchester City right-back, Rico Lewis extended his contract at the club and used the opportunity to remind Pep Guardiola where he would like to play on the pitch.

The academy graduate has developed into an important player for the Cityzens over the past two seasons, featuring in several key fixtures for the Sky Blues.

Despite the intense competition in Guardiola’s squad, the teenager has carved out a role for himself and is expected to feature more regularly as he continues his development.

On Friday, Manchester City confirmed that Rico Lewis extended his contract, a deal that will keep him at the Etihad Stadium until at least 2030.

The long-term agreement highlights the trust and belief Guardiola and the club’s hierarchy have in the versatile youngster.

Lewis admitted that the achievement was something he once thought was impossible, considering the wealth of talent already competing for places in the first team.

The England international said he still finds it hard to believe how quickly his career has progressed.

“I Like Playing Midfield” – Rico Lewis Declares

Since being promoted to the senior team, Guardiola has primarily used Lewis at right-back, a position he has adapted to with confidence.

However, City’s tactical system often sees him drift into midfield when the team has possession, a role that takes advantage of his composure and intelligence on the ball.

The Spanish coach has regularly praised Lewis for his ability to operate in tight spaces, noting how this movement helps City break down stubborn defences.

But the tactical shift does not come without risk, as it sometimes leaves the defence exposed and has resulted in Lewis being caught out of position.

Speaking after signing his new contract, Lewis explained where he feels most comfortable on the pitch.

“For me, I like playing midfield. It’s easier than changing from full-back to midfield, or midfield to full-back in terms of running,” Lewis said.

“It’s a bit long. I like playing midfield, being part of the game more but I’m happy to play wherever as long as I can help and contribute,” he added, according to Manchester City’s official website.

Rico Lewis Could Start As A Right-Back Against Manchester United On Sunday

Despite his preference for midfield, Lewis is likely to line up at right-back again this weekend when City face their local rivals Manchester United.

Guardiola currently has limited options in the role, with Matheus Nunez — a natural midfielder — also deployed there in recent weeks.

The lack of depth at right-back means that either Lewis or Nunez is expected to start against United, making Sunday’s derby another chance for the teenager to prove his quality.
