Manchester City head into a defining stretch of their season with little margin for error, as they prepare to face Everton in a Premier League encounter that could carry significant weight in the title race.
With the campaign nearing its conclusion and rivals Arsenal setting the pace at the summit, Pep Guardiola’s side know that any slip could prove costly.
The Sky Blues travel to Goodison Park after a rare extended break, a pause that may have offered some recovery time but does little to ease the mounting pressure.
Alongside their league ambitions, City must also balance preparations for the FA Cup final later this month, adding another layer of complexity to an already congested schedule.
Six fixtures in just 20 days underline the intensity of the run-in, where consistency is not just desired but essential.
Everton, however, are unlikely to make things straightforward. Playing on home soil, they will be motivated to disrupt City’s rhythm and potentially influence the title narrative.
While recent history heavily favours the visitors, there is a growing sense that this Everton side possesses a resilience that has not always been evident in previous campaigns.
City’s dominance faces renewed test
It is against this backdrop that former Sky Sports presenter Jeff Stelling has offered his assessment of the contest.
Drawing on both historical trends and present form, Stelling anticipates a closely fought encounter but ultimately expects City to edge it.
“Trips to Everton don’t usually turn out to be too tricky for City. In fact, they won on each of their last nine visits, a run going right back to 2017,” he told talkSPORT.
Those numbers underline the scale of City’s dominance at Goodison Park in recent years.
Since 2018, Guardiola’s men have made nine visits to the ground and emerged victorious on each occasion, scoring freely while offering little in return defensively. Such a record would ordinarily instil confidence, particularly at this decisive stage of the season.
Yet Stelling was quick to highlight that past results may not fully capture the current challenge. Everton, he suggested, have developed a more combative edge, one that could test City’s composure.
“But this is a more tenacious Everton than some in recent seasons, and City will surely be edging now we’ve got to the business end of the campaign,” he added.
Pressure, pedigree and a narrow forecast
Despite acknowledging Everton’s improvement, Stelling believes City’s experience in high-pressure situations will ultimately prove decisive.

Guardiola’s squad has repeatedly demonstrated an ability to deliver when stakes are at their highest, a trait that has underpinned their domestic success in recent years.
“But Pep’s team, they seem to thrive on pressure, don’t they? I think they’ll be good enough, but only just,” he said.
Stelling’s predicted scoreline of 2-1 in favour of City reflects that balance. It points to a match where Everton are capable of making an impact, particularly in front of their supporters, but where City’s attacking depth and tactical discipline could make the difference over 90 minutes.
Historically, Everton have struggled to impose themselves in this fixture. Across the last eight years, they have managed just four goals against City at Goodison Park, a statistic that highlights the defensive solidity and control typically exhibited by Guardiola’s side in these encounters.
In contrast, City have been prolific, registering 22 goals in the same period — a testament to their ability to translate dominance into tangible results.
