Pep Guardiola lists many reasons why Man City will drop points in title race

Pep Guardiola believes twists and turns still lie ahead in the Premier League title race, despite Manchester City closing the gap on Arsenal with a hard-earned victory over Newcastle United.

City’s 2-1 success at the Etihad Stadium moved them to within two points of the leaders, applying fresh pressure before Arsenal’s north London derby meeting with Tottenham. Yet while the Sky Blues are building momentum, Guardiola has cautioned against assuming a flawless finish to the campaign.

Nico O’Reilly proved the difference on Saturday evening, striking twice in the first half to secure three valuable points. Newcastle, however, underlined the competitive nature of the contest when Lewis Hall briefly restored parity, ensuring the home side were tested throughout.

The result marked City’s third consecutive Premier League win, a run that has strengthened their position at a critical stage of the season. In contrast, Arsenal have managed only two victories in their last seven league outings, a sequence that has opened the door for Guardiola’s side to mount sustained pressure.

Even so, the City manager struck a measured tone in his post-match assessment, insisting that the reality of a demanding schedule makes further dropped points almost inevitable.

Guardiola’s side remain involved in the FA Cup and Champions League, with the Carabao Cup final also part of a congested calendar.

It is precisely that demanding schedule which informs Guardiola’s realism about the weeks ahead.

“Today it looks like, I don’t know what happens tomorrow, of course now we take two more points off Aston Villa, two more points off Chelsea in qualification for the Champions League, today we are closer for the top of the league, that is an incredibly good sign,” Guardiola said after City beat Newcastle.

The victory strengthened City’s standing not only in the title race but also in the battle for Champions League qualification. Yet Guardiola was quick to stress that circumstances can change swiftly.

Despite trimming Arsenal’s advantage, Guardiola made it clear he does not expect perfection from his players over the remaining 11 league fixtures.

“I promise you many things is going to happen. I have the feeling we’re not going to win all the games, I don’t know about Arsenal, but I have the feeling we’re not going to win every game.

“This is my feeling, because come FA Cup, come Champions League, travels, final of the Carabao Cup is different because there’s an international break, but many, many games, injuries are going to come, many things are going to happen.

“The best way is relax now and focus on Leeds, then we’ll see. In the end it depends on our level, how we play, better and better.

“Was it a perfect game [against Newcastle]? No. Is it an ideal game? No. But we were a team, a team like the way you need to be in this stage in Champions League and in Premier League games against teams like Newcastle, this is what we have to do.”

The combination of domestic and European commitments has historically shaped title races, often rewarding consistency and resilience over brief surges of form.

City’s recent sequence of victories suggests they are rediscovering rhythm at a crucial juncture. Their control in possession, coupled with an ability to respond quickly to setbacks, was evident against Newcastle. Yet Guardiola’s emphasis on collective effort over perfection highlighted his broader perspective.

The challenge now is sustaining intensity across competitions. Rotation, recovery and tactical flexibility will all play significant roles. Injuries, as Guardiola suggested, are an unavoidable part of such a demanding schedule. So too are unexpected results.
