A Manchester City player has spoken candidly about the emotional and physical challenges he faced during one of the most difficult periods of his career, admitting there was a time he questioned whether he would ever rediscover his top form.
Rodri endured a serious knee injury that kept him sidelined for an extended spell, disrupting both his rhythm and confidence.
Although he managed to return late last season, his journey back to full fitness was far from smooth.
Minor setbacks continued to interrupt his progress, delaying any consistent run in the team until the early part of this year.
Even now, manager Pep Guardiola has suggested the player may not reach his peak condition until the upcoming world cup, where Rodri is expected to play a central role for Spain national team.
Despite those concerns, the 29-year-old has recently re-established himself as a regular presence in the starting line-up.
He has featured prominently in most of City’s recent fixtures, including their triumph over Arsenal in the Carabao Cup final. His growing influence on the pitch points to a player gradually rediscovering both form and confidence—something he admits once felt uncertain.
“It’s such an incredible thing to be back playing regularly,” he said. “I had been doubting many things including if I was going to be able to come back.
“Physically, you are in pain. Mentally, you have a lot of feelings. I really questioned myself, but getting to a place like where I’m at now, it makes me proud of the process I’ve lived. Now it’s about enjoying being back where I want to be.”
The recovery period proved to be as much a mental battle as it was a physical one. Time away from competitive football often brings reflection, and for Rodri, it meant confronting doubts about his future in the game.
Rehabilitation required patience and resilience, as progress was not always linear. Each setback forced him to reset expectations and maintain focus on long-term recovery rather than immediate results.
It was during this period that he experienced the emotional strain many athletes face when separated from the sport at the highest level.
His return, therefore, is not simply about regaining match fitness but also about overcoming the psychological barriers that followed his injury.
Being able to step back onto the pitch regularly now represents a significant personal achievement, beyond statistics or performances.
Embracing pressure as City chase success
With his place in the team becoming more consistent again, Rodri is now turning his attention to the closing stages of the campaign.
Manchester City remain in contention for major honours, and the midfielder appears ready to play his part in that pursuit.

The time spent recovering has also reshaped his perspective. Rather than feeling burdened by expectations, he now welcomes the intensity that comes with competing at the top level.
The pressure, once overwhelming during his recovery, has become something he relishes.
“When you go through a time like I’ve been through, you have a lot of time to think,” he said, speaking in an interview published in the Carabao Cup final programme.
With his contract running until 2027, Rodri’s focus is firmly on contributing to his team’s ambitions while also preparing for international duty.
If his recent performances are any indication, he is steadily moving closer to the level that made him one of the most influential midfielders in world football.
