Man City star under serious attack after shocking incident at Wembley against Arsenal

Manchester City secured another piece of silverware at Wembley, but a moment of individual expression from Rayan Cherki drew sharp media attack from Gary Neville during the Carabao Cup final.

City’s victory, inspired by a clinical brace from Nico O’Reilly, ensured Pep Guardiola claimed his fifth League Cup trophy with the club. The result could also carry significance beyond the final itself, offering momentum as City continue their pursuit of the Premier League title.

Despite sitting nine points behind Arsenal, City still have a game in hand and are set to welcome the London side to the Etihad Stadium next month.

Arsenal, meanwhile, remain without a trophy since 2020 and are still chasing their first league title since 2004.

Cherki moment draws reactions from pundits and fans

With City firmly in control at 2-0, thanks to two quick goals early in the second half from O’Reilly, the contest appeared to be slipping away from Arsenal. It was at this stage that Cherki attempted to showcase his flair, juggling the ball with a series of keepy-uppies in front of opponents.

The act did not go unnoticed. Guardiola, watching from the touchline, was caught by television cameras shaking his head in apparent disapproval at the Frenchman’s decision-making.

Neville, speaking during live commentary on Sky Sports, also reacted instantly to the incident. He pointed out that Arsenal defender Ben White appeared unimpressed, suggesting the timing of such showmanship was questionable given the stage of the match.

He said: “I don’t think he likes that [Ben] White, I think it’s a bit too early for that if I am being honest. I think I might have done that myself and he didn’t like it either. Pep Guardiola is a professional, confident but not arrogant.

“That was a little bit arrogant from Cherki. He (Cherki) is smiling as well. You have always got to remember that Arsenal can get a goal and you start to look silly if you are celebrating with 20-odd minutes to go. His team-mates will not think it’s a great idea either.”

While the focus briefly shifted to Cherki’s moment of flair, the broader picture remains one of opportunity for City. The victory at Wembley not only delivered silverware but also reinforced belief within Guardiola’s squad as the domestic campaign enters a decisive phase.

O’Reilly’s double proved decisive on the day, underlining City’s attacking quality and ability to take control of key matches. For Arsenal, the defeat adds further pressure in their search for major honours, particularly given their extended wait for league success.

The two sides are set to meet again in Manchester, a fixture that could have significant implications for the title race. With City holding a game in hand, the gap at the top may yet be reduced, ensuring the contest remains alive in the closing stages of the season.
