Manchester City will renew their rivalry with Real Madrid when the two European heavyweights meet in the round of 16 of the UEFA Champions League.
The first leg of the tie takes place in Madrid on Wednesday evening, with Pep Guardiola’s side travelling to the Spanish capital hoping to take a positive result back to England.
City finished eighth during the league phase of this season’s competition, a position that set up another meeting with the Spanish giants.
The fixture continues what has become a regular encounter between the two clubs in recent years, with the teams facing each other in four of the previous Champions League campaigns.
Real Madrid reached this stage after navigating the play-off round. Managed by Alvaro Arbeloa, the Spanish side overcame Portuguese club Benfica across two legs.
A brace from Vinicius Junior proved decisive as Madrid secured a 3-1 aggregate victory to book their place in the knockout round.
With two of Europe’s most successful clubs preparing to meet again, attention has also turned to the availability of Manchester City’s players.
Injuries have affected Guardiola’s squad at various points this season, and several names remain doubts or absentees ahead of the trip to Spain.
Injury and suspension update
One of the players currently sidelined is Rico Lewis. The young defender has missed Manchester City’s last three matches because of an ankle problem. Although the injury has kept him out of recent fixtures, the issue is not believed to be serious.
The England international is expected to return soon if his recovery continues as planned. At present, the Premier League meeting with West Ham United on March 14 is being viewed as a realistic target date for his comeback.
Until then, Guardiola may continue to rely on other defensive options while Lewis completes his rehabilitation.
City are dealing with a more serious concern regarding Josko Gvardiol. The Croatian defender suffered a tibial fracture earlier in the year during a match against Chelsea.
The injury has ruled him out indefinitely and could potentially keep him sidelined for the remainder of the campaign.
Gvardiol had been an important part of Guardiola’s defensive unit before the setback. The 24-year-old made 16 appearances in the Premier League this season, contributing two goals while also providing two assists.
His absence removes a versatile option from City’s back line at a critical stage of the season.
Another long-term absentee is midfielder Mateo Kovacic. The Croatian international has not featured since October due to a significant ankle injury that also affected his heel.

As a result, he has managed just two appearances across all competitions for Manchester City during the current campaign.
Despite the lengthy spell on the sidelines, Guardiola has suggested that Kovacic is progressing well in his recovery.
The manager indicated that the midfielder’s rehabilitation is moving in the right direction and expects the 31-year-old to be fit in time for the World Cup scheduled for this summer.
As Manchester City prepare for another high-profile Champions League showdown with Real Madrid, Guardiola must once again balance tactical planning with player availability.
The Spanish giants represent a familiar obstacle for the Premier League side, and the latest chapter in their rivalry promises to be closely contested.
