Manchester City’s UEFA Champions League journey came to a frustrating end against Real Madrid, but amid the disappointment at the Etihad Stadium, one player stood out.
Jeremy Doku drew widespread admiration from supporters after an energetic and determined display, even as Manchester City fell 2-1 on the night and exited the competition with a 5-1 aggregate loss.
City approached the second leg with urgency, looking to overturn a heavy deficit. Early signs were promising as Doku linked up effectively with Rayan Cherki to create the home side’s first opening.
Their attacking intent suggested belief in a comeback, but the contest soon tilted in Madrid’s favour.
The turning point came when Bernardo Silva was sent off for handling the ball on the line to stop an effort from Vinicius Junior. The Brazilian stepped up to convert the penalty, putting the visitors ahead and leaving City with a numerical disadvantage for the remainder of the game.
Despite the setback, City responded before the interval. Erling Haaland found the net four minutes before half-time to level the score, briefly reigniting hopes inside the stadium.
However, playing with ten men eventually took its toll. Deep into added time in the second half, Vinicius struck again to secure victory for Madrid and confirm their progression.
Doku shines in difficult circumstances
Even with the odds stacked against them, Doku remained a constant threat throughout the encounter. Operating on the flank, he repeatedly tested Trent Alexander-Arnold, showing pace, skill, and persistence.
Statistically, his contribution underlined his influence. Over the course of the match, he created one clear-cut opportunity and delivered five key passes, reflecting his creative impact despite limited support at times.
His performance earned him a rating of 8.3, highlighting his status as one of the standout players on the pitch.
While the result ultimately went against City, Doku’s willingness to take on defenders and drive the team forward did not go unnoticed. He continued to push until the final whistle, embodying the fighting spirit his side needed on a difficult night.
After the final whistle, supporters took to social media platform X to express their appreciation for the winger’s efforts. Many singled him out as a rare positive in an otherwise disappointing evening.
One fan, @plat_ooo, wrote: “Doku fought till very end!” Another, @Jarpje, added: “Doku is our only good player, only one with fight and will.”
A third supporter, @blueshyacinths, posted: “Jeremy Doku, I would never hate you.”
Others echoed similar sentiments, with @bra_concretekb commenting: “Doku is really our engine, playing with heart,” while @Jibayex noted: “Doku actually really tried today but it is what it is.”
Doku himself acknowledged the frustration of the result but remained positive about his team’s performance.

“I feel like we had a lot of chances,” Doku said post-match. “We played well, even with ten against 11, especially against a team like Real Madrid it’s going to be difficult, but we did well.
“We’re disappointed with the loss but it’s a hard reality. When you experience the games, it doesn’t feel like they were much better than us even though it looks it from the scoreline.”
Reflecting further, he pointed to the tactical nature of the contest and the impact of the first-leg result.
“It’s a different Real Madrid [compared to the league phase], but every game is different. The first leg score made them play a bit more defensively, they didn’t need to score. They’ve always had a great team, we know their quality. I feel like we did well today.
“This campaign will teach us some lessons, we will learn a lot for the future ones. We will analyse the game and see what we can do better and then look forward to Sunday,” he added.
