James Trafford received two ‘possible’ options to become Man City first choice goalkeeper

Manchester City’s young goalkeeper James Trafford has received advice from former England international David James as he fights to reclaim a place in Pep Guardiola’s starting lineup, following the arrival of Gianluigi Donnarumma.

The 22-year-old shot-stopper, once seen as City’s next long-term No. 1, now finds himself behind one of the world’s most renowned goalkeepers in the pecking order at the Etihad.

Trafford returned to Manchester City from Burnley during the summer in a £27 million deal, having impressed in two seasons with the Clarets. His comeback was celebrated as a homegrown success story — a player developed in the City academy, now ready to take charge between the posts.

But his prospects changed dramatically after City sealed a surprise deadline-day swoop for Donnarumma from Paris Saint-Germain for £26 million.

The Italian, a former European champion and winner of the Euro 2020 Player of the Tournament, had fallen out with his club in France, paving the way for a move to England.

Guardiola, long known for strengthening every department of his squad, jumped at the chance to sign a goalkeeper he once described as “one of the most complete in the world.”

As a result, the competition for the first choice goalkeeper between James Trafford and Donnarumma has become interesting.

The Italian’s presence has already made an impact. He has started eight matches for City, recording five clean sheets and helping the team climb to second in the Premier League standings ahead of their clash with Aston Villa.

Trafford, on the other hand, has featured only once — in a Carabao Cup third-round victory over Huddersfield Town — leaving questions over his future role this season.

David James urges Trafford to ‘be ready’ to take any available opportunity

While the competition is fierce, David James believes Trafford’s patience and preparation will be key if he wants to force his way back into Guardiola’s plans.

According to City Xtra, the former Manchester City and England goalkeeper offered words of encouragement and perspective to the young shot-stopper.

“The easy and obvious advice is, just be ready. You don’t know what the situation is,” James said.

“My position at Liverpool – touching on that although I was slightly older, I think 24 at the time – Bruce (Grobbelaar) got injured in a game with a few minutes to go, and I got my chance. And from then on in, I kept my place.”

James reflected on how a single opportunity changed the trajectory of his career, emphasizing that readiness can make all the difference.

“I don’t think I missed a game for three or four years. It’s slightly different because Bruce was more towards the end of his career than (Gianluigi) Donnarumma.”

He added that the Italian goalkeeper could pick up an injury which will give Trafford the opportunity he has always wanted.

“Donnarumma could get suspended for something innocuous or pick up an injury.”

He continued, “I don’t think his injury record is actually that bad, which would be slightly concerning, but if James (Trafford) thinks he’s not going to get chances. You’ve got many different cup opportunities at least to prove yourself – then he won’t give himself the best chance to be able to step in, take the position back and, with the World Cup coming, prove he should be in Thomas Tuchel’s side or starting squad.”

The former England No. 1 also hinted that Trafford’s current challenge could serve as a valuable learning period under Guardiola’s guidance.

Competing daily with a world-class goalkeeper like Donnarumma can sharpen his technique, mental resilience, and decision-making — traits that could define the next stage of his career.

Trafford’s uphill climb for Guardiola’s trust

For now, Trafford’s role appears limited, but his future remains full of potential. Guardiola is known for rotating his squad and rewarding strong performances, particularly in domestic cup fixtures.

Should Trafford impress in those moments, he may yet convince the manager of his readiness for a bigger stage.

It’s also worth noting that Manchester City’s long-term goalkeeping situation is in flux. Ederson’s desire for a new challenge was one reason City brought James Trafford and Donnarumma to the team. Donnarumma’s arrival on a long-term contract further complicates the hierarchy.

Guardiola, however, has always maintained that competition brings the best out of his players — and Trafford’s hunger could prove decisive.

For now, though, Trafford’s task is straightforward yet demanding: stay ready. Injuries, suspensions, or tactical adjustments could open a window at any moment, and Guardiola has a history of rewarding players who step up when opportunity strikes.

Meanwhile, as City prepare to face Aston Villa this weekend, both James Trafford and Donnarumma Will likely made the squad but the England international is expected to retain his place on the bench, watching Donnarumma continue his impressive start in England.

Yet behind every world-class goalkeeper stands another waiting for his moment — and Trafford, guided by James’ advice, will be determined to ensure that when his comes, he’s prepared to make it count.
