Manchester City head to Stamford Bridge this weekend knowing that another victory could significantly strengthen their position in the Premier League title race, while Chelsea face mounting pressure in a season that has yet to meet expectations.
Pep Guardiola’s side arrive in confident mood after recording statement wins over Arsenal and Liverpool in recent cup fixtures, results that have reinforced belief within the squad as the campaign approaches its decisive phase.
For Chelsea, however, the outlook is less assured. Liam Rosenior’s team are battling inconsistency, with their hopes of securing Champions League football still uncertain and the FA Cup now representing their most realistic chance of silverware.
Both sides must also contend with a number of injury and availability concerns, which could have a major bearing on the outcome of the contest.
Chelsea’s selection concerns deepen
Chelsea’s preparations have been disrupted by a growing list of absentees, with as many as seven senior players potentially unavailable for the visit of Manchester City.
Club captain Enzo Fernandez will play no part after being handed a two-match suspension by the club.
The decision followed comments he made during the international break, in which he indicated a willingness to consider a move to Real Madrid during the summer transfer window.
His absence removes a key figure from Chelsea’s midfield at a crucial time.
Further forward, former City academy player Jamie Gittens remains sidelined. The winger has not featured since suffering a hamstring injury at the beginning of February, and there is no indication he will return in time for the weekend.
Chelsea’s defensive issues are equally concerning. Reece James continues to struggle with a hamstring problem and is now targeting a return before the end of the season rather than this fixture.
Meanwhile, Trevoh Chalobah is expected to be out until May after being stretchered off during the defeat by Paris Saint-Germain, compounding the club’s problems at centre-back.
Levi Colwill’s long-term absence has also left a gap in the defensive unit. The young defender has missed the entire campaign so far due to a serious cruciate ligament injury, and his return timeline remains unchanged.
There is, however, a degree of cautious optimism regarding two players. Goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen, who has been unavailable since March following minor surgery, could be included in the matchday squad if he completes his recovery in time.
Benoit Badiashile, who has missed recent matches due to illness, is also pushing for a return and may offer Rosenior additional options at the back.
Despite these potential boosts, Chelsea’s squad depth will be tested against one of the league’s most consistent sides. Much will depend on how effectively they can reorganise in the absence of several key contributors.
City aim to capitalise despite defensive doubts
In contrast, Chelsea’s opponents have fewer concerns, though Guardiola’s side are not entirely without issues of their own.
Manchester City’s primary worries are concentrated in defence. Josko Gvardiol remains a long-term absentee after suffering a broken leg in the reverse fixture earlier this season, an injury that has also raised concerns about his availability for upcoming international tournaments.

Ruben Dias is another doubt after sustaining a problem late in training ahead of the recent win over Liverpool.
The Portuguese defender had only recently returned from injury, having missed the Carabao Cup final prior to the international break. His fitness will be closely monitored in the lead-up to the match.
John Stones has also encountered another setback. Although his issue is not believed to be serious, he was unavailable for the Liverpool game and may again be absent this weekend.
Providing an update on the situation, City assistant head coach Pep Lijnders said: “Ruben got a knock in the last few minutes of training. We are assessing it.
“I think he has a scan [last Saturday] so we will have to see. John will not be long-term, I think, but he was not available for today.”
Even with these defensive uncertainties, City’s overall squad remains in strong condition, particularly in attacking areas where they have consistently delivered in recent weeks.
