There is often a sense of uncertainty when a defining era comes to an end at a football club, particularly when the departing figure has transformed the institution in almost every possible way.
At Manchester City, that moment has arrived as Pep Guardiola prepares to leave after a decade that reshaped both the club and English football.
The Spaniard’s departure from the Etihad Stadium closes a remarkable chapter filled with domestic dominance, tactical innovation and historic success.
Yet as discussions intensify over who will take charge next, Guardiola has made it clear that he does not want his successor attempting to imitate him.
The leading candidate to step into the role is Enzo Maresca, a coach who knows the environment well after previously working within City’s academy structure and later serving on Guardiola’s backroom staff during the club’s Treble-winning campaign.
Since then, Maresca has built his own reputation through spells with Leicester City and Chelsea.
Despite the expectations surrounding the Italian, Guardiola believes the most important thing his successor can do is remain authentic rather than trying to recreate what came before.
“Be themselves. A manager has to be himself. Unique,” Guardiola said when discussing the qualities needed for the next City manager.
“The club will be there to support him unconditionally. Like they have done it to me, they will do it to him and his staff.”
Although his time in Manchester brought extraordinary success, Guardiola has repeatedly spoken about the need for fresh ideas and renewed energy.
The 55-year-old feels this is the correct moment to step away because he no longer believes he can maintain the same intensity required for another campaign.
Maresca, if appointed, would inherit one of the most demanding positions in European football.
Comparisons have already been drawn with the challenge faced by David Moyes when he succeeded Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United in 2013.
Guardiola’s achievements have elevated expectations at City to extraordinary levels, leaving little room for error for whoever follows him.
Yet there is also a sense inside the club that continuity exists through the structures Guardiola helped shape during his time there.
Maresca’s familiarity with the club’s football philosophy and internal culture is viewed as a major advantage, though Guardiola’s message suggests that simply understanding the system will not be enough. Individual identity and leadership, he believes, are essential.
Guardiola ready for rest but future options remain open
While attention has naturally focused on City’s future, Guardiola himself appears determined to embrace a period away from the relentless pressures of club management.
He is expected to remain connected to the wider City Football Group in an ambassadorial capacity, but his immediate plan is to step back from daily coaching responsibilities.
Those close to him reportedly believe it will be difficult for Guardiola to stay away from football for long. His intense commitment to the game has defined his managerial career, and many suspect he may eventually return to the touchline after a short break.

Guardiola, however, sees the challenge differently. For now, he is focused on proving to himself that he can disconnect from the constant demands of elite management.
Even so, speculation about his long-term future has already begun. Guardiola has previously hinted that this would be his final role in club football, although he has expressed interest in international management.
Upcoming major tournaments could potentially offer appealing opportunities, particularly with UEFA Euro 2028 set to be hosted partly in England and the 2030 FIFA World Cup taking place in Spain, Portugal and Morocco.
When questioned about whether he could one day manage England national football team or even return to Manchester City in another capacity, Guardiola stopped short of dismissing the possibility entirely.
His immediate concentration, however, remains fixed on ensuring a memorable farewell.
