Guardiola reveals the only threat that could stop Man City against Forest

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola believes a single factor could swing the outcome of his side’s Premier League meeting with Nottingham Forest – the presence of their head coach, Vitor Pereira.

City welcome Forest knowing little margin for error remains in the title race. Guardiola’s men sit second in the table, five points adrift of leaders Arsenal, who have played a game more.

With the campaign entering its decisive phase, the City boss expects a stern examination from opponents fighting at the other end of the standings. Forest, currently battling to avoid relegation, may be under pressure.

Speaking about Pereira during his post match interview, Guardiola claimed that the manager could be the decisive factor during the match.

He said: “I remember him from Porto. It was the Super Cup in Monaco, I remember perfectly. I remember playing Wolves last season, they outplayed us in the first half, we were incredibly lucky.

“A top-class manager. They were alive against Brighton and Liverpool. When we played them with Sean Dyche, they have quality players like Morgan Gibbs-White and Callum Hudson-Odoi. They have top, top players and a big squad.”

Guardiola’s reference to past encounters underlines the respect he holds for Pereira’s tactical acumen. The City manager has long maintained that league position does not always reflect ability, and he believes Forest’s squad contains the quality to trouble any opponent on their day.

City will take encouragement from recent history. They have won four of their past five league meetings with Forest, including a 2-1 victory at the City Ground earlier this season. Yet Guardiola is wary of reading too much into those numbers, particularly against a side with renewed belief under new leadership.

Forest’s survival bid adds another layer of intensity. For Guardiola, motivation on both sides will ensure there is no shortage of urgency when the teams meet at the Etihad Stadium.

“They play for important things (battling against relegation) like us and this is starting to be decisive part of the season. We have two games in the Premier League before the international break. We can’t drop points because we are five points behind Arsenal.”

Arsenal’s fixture away at Brighton on the same evening means any dropped points could widen the gap at the summit. In a title race where momentum is everything, Guardiola knows consistency is non-negotiable.

Meanwhile, while the immediate focus is Forest, City’s schedule offers no respite. The run-in includes domestic and European challenges, with crucial fixtures looming in the Champions League and FA Cup.

Guardiola, however, views this congestion not as a burden but as a privilege.

“Premier League is so tough,” said Guardiola. “Always I’ve said, I don’t judge the teams depending on the position of the table, never ever. I know the quality they have.

“The privilege in March to be here, we are in the competitions. A dream. We’re so happy. Ok, knowing 10 games left [in the Premier League], two games against [Real] Madrid [in the Champions League], game with Newcastle in the FA Cup – it’s good to be here. I’m only concerned about tomorrow [against Forest].”

City’s ability to remain competitive across competitions has been a hallmark of Guardiola’s tenure. The Spaniard’s insistence on focusing solely on the next task reflects a philosophy that has delivered sustained success.

The visit of Forest may appear, on paper, a fixture City should win – but Guardiola’s comments suggest he expects nothing straightforward.
