Guardiola reveals tactical plan to beat Chelsea in a must win clash

Manchester City return to Premier League action on Sunday knowing that anything short of victory could further complicate their pursuit of the title.

Chelsea visit Etihad Stadium, and while the fixture often carries its own weight, the wider context has added extra pressure to the occasion.

City come into the match after a frustrating afternoon on New Year’s Day, when dominance did not translate into goals. A goalless draw against Sunderland left Pep Guardiola’s side with just a point to show for their efforts, while Arsenal used the opportunity to stretch their lead at the top of the table.

Chelsea, meanwhile, also dropped points in their most recent outing, conceding late to draw 2-2 with Bournemouth. Both clubs now find themselves searching for momentum at a crucial stage of the season.

The league table underlines why this meeting matters so much. City have been here before, chasing down leaders in the second half of a campaign, but Guardiola is well aware that margins are fine. Dropped points, especially at home, can be costly.

Chelsea’s own season has been turbulent, marked by inconsistency and the recent dismissal of head coach Enzo Maresca, a move that has added an element of uncertainty to their approach.

Despite the pressure, there has been no sense of panic from Guardiola. His teams have often responded to setbacks with strong performances, and the manager’s calm tone ahead of Sunday’s game suggests he is focusing on control rather than emotion.

The challenge, as he sees it, is less about reacting to Chelsea and more about ensuring his own side perform to the level they expect.

Speaking ahead of the game, the City manager made it clear that his attention is firmly on his own camp rather than potential surprises from the opposition.

“Don’t talk much. If you don’t know what the opponent is going to do – because I don’t know which manager will be sitting and I don’t know what’s going to happen,” he said according to City Xtra.

Rather than second-guess Chelsea’s approach, City are expected to focus on their pressing, positional play and movement in the final third, areas that Guardiola believes will decide the outcome.

As expected, Chelsea visit to Etihad Stadium is also full emotional aspect. The blues remain one of the league’s most high-profile sides, and matches between the two clubs often carry an edge.

Guardiola, however, has tried to frame the fixture as part of a wider journey rather than a standalone event.

“No concerns more than thinking about yourself and what you have to do with our people [the fans], who are going to help in two tough games against Chelsea and Brighton,” he explained.

The reference to supporters is significant. Guardiola has often spoken about the role of the crowd during demanding periods of the season, and with back-to-back challenging fixtures, City will be relying on home support to lift the team when pressure builds.

Chelsea challenge and Guardiola’s focus on control

City will be aware of the usual threats when Chelsea visit Etihad Stadium, particularly in transition. Pace on the break and individual flair have troubled Guardiola’s teams in the past, and maintaining defensive discipline will be key.

At the same time, City’s emphasis will be on moving the ball quickly and forcing Chelsea into deep defensive positions, limiting their ability to counter.

Guardiola’s tactical approach is unlikely to deviate dramatically from his principles. Control of midfield, full-backs stepping into advanced positions, and fluid movement among the forward players are all expected.

The challenge lies in execution. Against Sunderland, City created openings but lacked the final touch. Improving that efficiency is now a priority.

By downplaying the opposition and focusing on internal standards, Guardiola appears to be shielding his players from external noise. In a long season, that balance between urgency and calm can be decisive.
