Cole Palmer drops plan to beat Man City as he reveals Rosenior’s message

Cole Palmer says Chelsea must deliver across every detail this week if they are to get the better of Manchester City, revealing the clear message from head coach Liam Rosenior before Sunday’s meeting at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues head into the fixture on the back of an emphatic FA Cup display, having swept aside Port Vale 7-0 in the quarter-finals.

That result has offered a timely lift, but the scale of the challenge awaiting them this weekend is significantly greater, with City arriving as one of the most formidable sides in the league.

Chelsea’s position in the table adds further urgency to the occasion. With only seven matches left to play, they remain outside the Champions League places, sitting sixth and needing a strong finish to close the gap.

Recent league form has not helped their cause, with consecutive defeats to Newcastle and Everton denting momentum at a crucial stage of the campaign.

Their record at Stamford Bridge has also been a concern this season, making Sunday’s encounter even more significant. Turning their home form around could be key if they are to sustain a late push into the top four.

Earlier in the campaign, Chelsea showed they can compete with City, earning a 1-1 draw at the Etihad Stadium.

On that occasion, Enzo Fernandez struck deep into stoppage time to secure a valuable point, underlining the fine margins that often define meetings between the sides.

Palmer, who has been one of Chelsea’s standout performers this term, is expected to play a central role once again.

The attacker recently indicated he has overcome some physical challenges, suggesting he is now in a better condition to influence matches consistently during the run-in.

Speaking after the FA Cup victory, Palmer outlined the expectations set within the squad ahead of the clash, emphasising the need for total focus throughout the week.

“The gaffer has said it needs to be a perfect week; everyone needs to be on it,” Palmer told Chelsea’s website.

Preparation, concentration and execution will all need to align if Chelsea are to produce a performance capable of yielding a positive result.

Palmer acknowledged the psychological impact of returning to winning ways, suggesting the timing could prove beneficial as Chelsea approach a defining stretch of the season.

“Every time you win, it’s nice. Losing those four games was not good and it’s fair to say that confidence was down. It’s natural for it to go down.

“But the win [against Port Vale] meant everyone was happy and now we’ve got a clear week and we need to have a good game on Sunday.

‘We’re looking forward to it, it should be a good one.”

With a full week to prepare, Chelsea have the opportunity to refine their approach and ensure they are physically and mentally ready for the test ahead.

Facing Manchester City demands near-perfection, and as Palmer has highlighted, that standard has already been set internally. The challenge now is to meet it when it matters most.
