Manchester City legend Sergio Aguero has called for another City player to lift the PFA Player of the Year award, with Phil Foden as his top choice.
The Professional Footballers’ Association will announce the winner of the PFA Player of the Year 2025 on August 19. Despite no Manchester City players being among the leading contenders this season, Aguero believes Foden can reclaim the crown.
Foden, a product of the Manchester City Football Academy, has been one of the Premier League’s brightest stars. In the 2023/24 season, the England midfielder scored 26 goals and registered 12 assists in 49 matches across all competitions, earning him the PFA Player of the Year 2024 title.
He was crucial when Kevin De Bruyne and Erling Haaland were sidelined through injury.
However, the 2024/25 season saw a drop in Foden’s form. Manchester City narrowly secured a top-four finish, and none of their players made the shortlist for this year’s award.
Aguero Backs Foden For A Comeback Season
Despite the setback, Aguero remains confident in Foden’s ability to bounce back.
Speaking to Stake, he said: “I’d like Foden to win Player of the Year again. I’ve mentioned Phil but there’s also (Alexis) Mac Allister, Enzo Fernandez, Cole Palmer or Declan Rice. They are sure to stand out and have a shot at the accolade.”
PFA Player Of The Year 2025 Nominees
The PFA Player of the Year 2025 shortlist includes Bruno Fernandes (Manchester United), Alexander Isak (Newcastle United), and Declan Rice (Arsenal).
Liverpool stars Alexis Mac Allister and Mohamed Salah are also nominated, along with former Manchester City midfielder Cole Palmer, now at Chelsea.
In a similar news, Aguero backed Manchester City to reclaim the English Premier League title and put behind them the setback of the previous season.
Also, he predicted Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea to join his former club as the top four teams this campaign.
