Man City ready to splash £100m on another England superstar after Anderson deal

Manchester City are preparing for what could become one of the biggest transfer battles of the summer as they join Arsenal and Chelsea in the race to sign another England international.

Aston Villa forward Morgan Rogers has emerged as one of the Premier League’s most sought-after attacking talents after a remarkable rise under manager Unai Emery.

Having played a key role in Villa’s UEFA Europa League triumph last season, Rogers has attracted attention from several elite clubs thanks to his versatility, creativity and growing influence at both club and international level.

The 23-year-old enjoyed the finest campaign of his career during the 2025-26 season, scoring 14 goals and providing 12 assists in 50 appearances across all competitions.

His performances helped Villa secure European success and earned him recognition from England selectors, leading to his first senior international call-ups.

Interest from Manchester City has been building for several months. Earlier reports suggested the club were monitoring the player’s development, but the situation has now progressed significantly.

Discussions have reportedly taken place between Rogers’ representatives and a number of interested clubs as they seek to understand the player’s long-term ambitions and future plans.

City’s sporting director Hugo Viana is understood to be a strong admirer of Rogers and views him as a player capable of strengthening the club’s attacking options.

The Portuguese executive has been heavily involved in shaping City’s squad following the departure of former manager Pep Guardiola, with the club entering a new era under incoming head coach Enzo Maresca.

While City remain firmly in the running, they are far from alone in their pursuit.

Arsenal and Chelsea have also intensified their efforts, creating what could become one of the most closely watched transfer sagas of the summer window.

Arsenal make strong early impression

According to journalist Graeme Bailey, Aston Villa’s substantial valuation has not discouraged any of the clubs involved.

Villa are believed to want a fee in excess of £100 million before considering a sale.

The Midlands club are determined to ensure that Rogers becomes the most expensive player in their history should he leave Villa Park.

Their benchmark remains the £100 million transfer of Jack Grealish to Manchester City in 2021, and reports suggest they want any Rogers deal to surpass that figure.

Part of the reasoning behind Villa’s stance relates to a sell-on agreement with Middlesbrough.

The Championship club are reportedly entitled to receive up to 20 per cent of any future transfer fee, increasing Villa’s motivation to negotiate the highest possible price.

Among the interested clubs, Arsenal are believed to have made a particularly positive impression on the player and his entourage.

Manager Mikel Arteta and sporting director Andrea Berta have reportedly taken a hands-on approach in discussions, presenting a detailed sporting project and explaining how Rogers could become an important part of the squad at the Emirates Stadium.

Manchester City, meanwhile, believe they possess a compelling case of their own.

Rogers spent part of his youth development at the Etihad Stadium before moving on without making a senior appearance.

Club officials reportedly see the possibility of bringing him back as an attractive opportunity, particularly given the progress he has made since leaving.

Chelsea rely on existing relationships

Chelsea have also positioned themselves as serious contenders in the battle for Rogers’ signature.

Their interest is strengthened by the presence of co-director of recruitment Joe Shields, who has longstanding connections with the player.

Shields played a key role in bringing Rogers to Manchester City’s academy during his previous spell at the club and remains familiar with his development journey.

That relationship is understood to have helped Chelsea maintain regular communication with the player’s representatives throughout the process.

Stamford Bridge officials believe Rogers possesses the technical quality and adaptability required to thrive within their evolving squad.
