Seven key first team players could leave Man City

Manchester City could be set for one of the most significant summers in the club’s recent history, with a number of first-team players facing uncertain futures following a period of dramatic change at the Etihad Stadium.

The Premier League side are entering a new era after the departure of Pep Guardiola, whose successful spell in Manchester came to an end at the conclusion of the season.

The Spaniard’s exit has left a sizeable void at the club, and City are still working to identify the man who will lead the next chapter.

According to BBC Sport, discussions remain ongoing between City and Chelsea regarding Enzo Maresca.

The Italian coach has emerged as the leading candidate to replace Guardiola after impressing during his managerial career and previous spell within City’s coaching structure.

While the managerial situation continues to dominate headlines, attention is also turning towards the composition of the squad.

A summer that has already seen the departures of Guardiola, John Stones and Bernardo Silva may yet bring even more change.

Reports suggest City could be prepared to sanction the exits of several established first-team players as they reshape the squad for the future.

The prospect of a large-scale rebuild has fuelled speculation regarding a number of senior and emerging talents.

Several first-team players facing uncertain futures

According to a report by The Athletic, as many as seven members of City’s senior squad could be available for transfer during the current window.

Among those linked with potential departures is midfielder Mateo Kovacic. The Croatia international arrived from Chelsea in 2023 and was expected to add experience and control to City’s midfield options.

However, he has struggled to secure a regular starting place and has often found himself competing for opportunities.

With only a year remaining on his current deal, questions are beginning to arise over whether the club will offer him an extension or decide to move him on while they can still command a transfer fee.

Given City’s ongoing squad restructuring, Kovacic’s future appears increasingly uncertain.

Forward Omar Marmoush is another player reportedly under consideration. Signed from Eintracht Frankfurt in 2025, the Egypt international arrived with high expectations after impressing in Germany.

However, he has found consistency difficult to achieve in England.

Despite flashes of quality, Marmoush has managed only 16 goals in 61 appearances across all competitions.

While those numbers are not insignificant, they may fall short of the standards expected at a club competing for major honours domestically and in Europe.

Defender Nathan Ake is also among the names being discussed. The Dutch international has been a dependable member of City’s squad over recent seasons, offering versatility and experience across the back line.

Nevertheless, reports indicate the club may be willing to listen to offers should suitable interest arrive.

Midfielders Nico Gonzalez and Tijjani Reijnders have likewise been mentioned as possible departures.

The inclusion of Reijnders may come as a surprise to many supporters, considering he only joined the club last summer.

However, significant changes in management often bring shifts in tactical priorities, and some players can quickly find themselves reassessing their roles within a new system.

For Gonzalez, the challenge has been establishing himself in one of the most competitive midfield departments in European football.

Opportunities have not always been easy to come by, and a move elsewhere could potentially offer more consistent playing time.

Goalkeeper James Trafford also finds himself at a crossroads. The England shot-stopper returned to City from Burnley with ambitions of challenging for a prominent role. Yet circumstances have not unfolded as planned.

The arrival of Gianluigi Donnarumma significantly altered the goalkeeping hierarchy at the club.

Trafford was quickly pushed down the pecking order and has struggled to secure regular appearances since then.

At his age, consistent minutes are likely to be a major consideration, and a transfer could prove beneficial for both player and club.

Academy graduate Rico Lewis is another name attracting attention.

Once regarded as one of City’s brightest young prospects, the versatile defender and midfielder enjoyed a rapid rise into the first team.

However, his involvement has gradually declined over the past 18 months.

Lewis remains highly regarded for his technical quality and tactical intelligence, but reduced opportunities have inevitably prompted questions about his long-term future.

Any decision involving a homegrown talent would undoubtedly attract significant interest across the Premier League.

Defensive stars attracting attention from European giants

Beyond the players reportedly available for transfer, there are also concerns regarding the futures of some of City’s most important defenders.

Josko Gvardiol is said to be evaluating his options amid growing interest from some of Europe’s biggest clubs.

The Croatia international has established himself as one of the continent’s leading defenders, and his performances have not gone unnoticed.

Both Bayern Munich and Barcelona are reportedly monitoring his situation closely.

While City would be reluctant to lose a player of his calibre, the uncertainty surrounding the club’s transition period may encourage rival sides to test their resolve.

Meanwhile, Ruben Dias is also being linked with a potential move away from Manchester.

The Portugal international has been one of City’s most influential figures since arriving at the club and has played a crucial role in their domestic and continental success.

Reports indicate that Real Madrid are keeping a close eye on the defender’s situation.
