Man City superstar produces another moment of magic and gets compared to Zinedine Zidane

Rayan Cherki‘s growing influence on the international stage continued to attract attention after another eye-catching display for France, even as Didier Deschamps’ side suffered a disappointing defeat to Ivory Coast in their latest World Cup warm-up fixture.

The attacking midfielder, who recently completed a high-profile move to Manchester City, was one of the few bright sparks during a difficult evening for Les Bleus at Stade de la Beaujoire.

France were beaten 2-1 by Ivory Coast, a result that exposed several concerns ahead of the upcoming World Cup.

While the final scoreline left supporters frustrated, Cherki’s performance generated widespread praise and further strengthened the belief that he could become a central figure in France’s plans for the tournament.

The former Lyon playmaker opened the scoring after producing a moment of individual brilliance inside the penalty area, showcasing the technical ability and confidence that have become trademarks of his game.

Deschamps highlights positives amid frustration

France manager Didier Deschamps acknowledged his disappointment with the outcome but pointed to encouraging elements within his team’s performance, especially during the first half.

“It’s a defeat, it never feels good, even if we did good things especially in the first half,” reacted Didier Deschamps at the microphone of TF1.

“It was more difficult in second. The many changes didn’t help, there were fewer automatisms than with the players who started.”

Deschamps’ comments reflected the contrast between France’s promising start and their struggles after the interval.

While the coach was unhappy with the overall result, he was able to take comfort from the displays of certain individuals, none more so than Cherki.

After the match, Cherki himself appeared unfazed by the growing praise surrounding his performance.

The young star adopted a calm approach when discussing his display, insisting that his focus remained on preparation rather than personal recognition.

“On a personal level, it’s a normal performance, just to get in shape,” he said.

Yet it was another remark from the France international that attracted significant attention and highlighted the confidence currently flowing through the squad.

“We will not go to the World Cup as favorites, we will go to crush everyone.”

Former Lyon star earns comparisons with Zidane

Perhaps the most striking reaction to Cherki’s performance came from respected French journalist Daniel Riolo, who believes the midfielder offers something France have lacked for many years.

Speaking after the match, Riolo was captivated by the youngster’s ability to dictate play and shoulder creative responsibility in a way rarely seen in recent French teams.

“We saw a Cherki festival but we have to see to what level we will give it the keys.

“He took the keys, he touched a lot of balls, we looked for him, he oriented the game and he showed his technical qualities of what we call ‘the little genius of the 10’ like him,” he enthused at the RMC microphone.

The assessment reflects a growing belief that Cherki could become the creative heartbeat of the national team.

Throughout the first half, teammates consistently looked to him when building attacks, and he responded by directing the tempo and finding spaces that others could not.

His willingness to receive the ball under pressure, combined with his exceptional close control and vision, allowed France to progress forward with greater fluidity.

Even when moves broke down, Cherki continued to demand possession and attempt ambitious solutions.

Riolo went even further by drawing comparisons with one of the greatest players in French football history, suggesting that Cherki possesses qualities not seen since the era of Zinedine Zidane.

“And we weren’t used to that. For 20-25 years, we haven’t had a player like that to lead the Blues’ game,” he continued, referring to Zinedine Zidane.

“It was not the Deschamps tradition. Since Zidane, who have you given the keys to? We don’t have any other players. There, you put him 10 and all the balloons went through him.”

Riolo also highlighted the courage shown by the midfielder throughout the game.

Rather than playing safe, Cherki consistently attempted inventive passes and creative solutions, accepting that not every move would succeed.

“In addition, he delighted you with the little lob to cross, his goal… He dared things and took responsibility for having missed some. You have to accept it from a player like that.”
