England star rejects Enzo Maresca’s plans as he determines to leave Man City

Jack Grealish is reportedly still considering a permanent switch to Everton this summer despite the prospect of a fresh opportunity at Manchester City under incoming manager Enzo Maresca.

The England international spent the previous campaign on loan at Everton, where he sought regular football after finding opportunities increasingly limited at the Etihad Stadium.

While City’s managerial transition has opened the possibility of a renewed role within the squad, reports suggest Grealish remains attracted by the idea of making his stay on Merseyside permanent.

According to Football Insider, the winger “keen” on completing a full transfer to Everton following a season that allowed him to regain valuable minutes on the pitch.

The situation presents an intriguing dilemma for both player and club. Unlike many transfer cases where a footballer is clearly surplus to requirements, Grealish’s future appears less straightforward.

Maresca, who is expected to officially begin work in the coming weeks, is understood to be interested in discussing plans directly with the winger before any final decision is reached.

The Italian coach reportedly believes Grealish could still have a role to play at Manchester City and is willing to offer him an opportunity to prove himself.

That potential lifeline has added uncertainty to what many believed would be a relatively straightforward move to Everton.

For Grealish, however, the central issue may not be about remaining at one of Europe’s elite clubs. Instead, it could be about securing consistent playing opportunities during a crucial stage of his career.

Having already experienced periods on the fringes of City’s starting line-up, the former Aston Villa captain knows the challenge of competing for places in a squad packed with world-class talent.

Although Manchester City continue to compete for major honours every season, the reality for Grealish is that regular involvement cannot be guaranteed.

At 30 years old and approaching his 31st birthday later this year, he is entering a phase of his career where weekly football could prove more valuable than simply being part of a title-challenging squad.

The coming weeks are therefore expected to be significant as discussions take place regarding his future and the role he might play under a new manager.

Everton spell reignited Grealish’s confidence

Grealish’s temporary move to Everton last season was viewed by many as an opportunity to reset his career.

After struggling to establish himself as a regular starter at Manchester City, the loan arrangement offered him a chance to become a central figure within a different environment.

The move also carried international significance.

According to reports at the time of his arrival, Everton saw the transfer as an opportunity to help Grealish rediscover his best form while also improving his prospects of returning to the England setup ahead of the World Cup.

The winger embraced the challenge and benefited from the increased responsibility that came with being one of the team’s most experienced attacking players.

At Everton, he was no longer competing against a collection of elite internationals for limited opportunities. Instead, he found himself in a position where his creativity, leadership and experience were viewed as essential components of the club’s ambitions.

That sense of importance may ultimately prove decisive when Grealish assesses his options.
