Former Man City star arrested: Police investigating shocking allegations

Former England international Raheem Sterling has been arrested on suspicion of drug-driving following a motorway collision involving his Lamborghini, according to police.

The 31-year-old forward, who previously played for Liverpool, Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal, was detained after his vehicle struck roadside barriers on the M3 in Hampshire on Thursday morning.

Authorities confirmed that no one was injured during the incident and that no other vehicles were involved. Sterling has since been released on bail while investigations continue.

The development represents another difficult chapter for the winger, whose career has experienced a dramatic decline in recent years after once being regarded as one of England’s most influential attacking players.

Hampshire Police detailed the circumstances surrounding the incident in an official statement released on Thursday.

“Just before 9am on Thursday, we received reports that a Lamborghini was in collision with barriers on the M3 southbound, close to the Minley Interchange. No other vehicles were involved and no injuries were reported.

“The driver, a 31-year-old man, from Berkshire, has been arrested on suspicion of driving a vehicle whilst unfit through drugs, driving dangerously, possession of a Class C drug and failing to provide a specimen. He has been bailed while our enquiries continue.”

Police have not announced any formal charges, and enquiries remain ongoing.

Sterling, who earned 82 caps for England during an international career that included appearances at major tournaments, is one of the most recognisable footballers of his generation.

His rise from a promising young talent at Liverpool to a multiple Premier League champion at Manchester City made him a key figure in English football for much of the last decade.

From Premier League champion to uncertain future

Sterling’s playing career reached its highest point during his spell at Manchester City under Pep Guardiola.

After leaving Liverpool in a high-profile transfer, he became one of the Premier League’s most productive attackers, helping City dominate domestic football.

His pace, movement and eye for goal contributed significantly to the club’s success as they secured four league titles during his time at the Etihad Stadium.

He was also a regular fixture for England, playing a major role in several international campaigns and establishing himself as one of the country’s most experienced players.

However, fortunes began to change following his departure from Manchester City in 2022.

Chelsea moved to sign Sterling in a deal that was expected to provide him with a fresh challenge and an opportunity to continue competing at the highest level.

Yet his time at Stamford Bridge never fully delivered the consistency that had characterised his peak years.

Despite moments of promise, he struggled to establish himself as a decisive figure in a team undergoing significant change.

After two seasons in west London, Chelsea sanctioned a loan move to Arsenal in the hope that regular football would help revive his form but that revival never truly materialised.

During his loan spell with the Gunners, Sterling found opportunities difficult to come by and managed just one goal in 28 appearances.

The statistics reflected a broader struggle to recapture the influence that once made him one of the most feared wingers in English football.

Chelsea eventually agreed to terminate his remaining contract in January, bringing an end to a disappointing chapter for both player and club.

Seeking a new beginning, Sterling completed a move to Dutch side Feyenoord. The transfer offered the possibility of rebuilding his career away from the intense scrutiny of the Premier League. Yet his difficulties continued.

The former England forward made only eight appearances for the Eredivisie club and failed to find the net.

Limited playing time and an inability to regain top form raised further questions about what the future might hold for a player who had previously amassed more than 200 goals during his professional career.

Van Persie defends Sterling amid criticism

Despite Sterling’s struggles on the pitch, Feyenoord head coach Robin van Persie publicly defended the winger and criticised what he felt was unfair treatment of the player.

Following Sterling’s final appearance for the Dutch club, Van Persie urged observers to show greater respect for a footballer whose achievements, he argued, should not be forgotten because of a difficult spell in his career.

“Personally, I struggle with the cynicism surrounding him. think respect is more appropriate. In any case, I don’t like cynicism. I can’t stand the whole atmosphere around him.

“Everyone has to know their place in that. And I think we sometimes go a bit overboard in the Netherlands regarding that.”

Van Persie also highlighted Sterling’s long list of accomplishments as evidence that the winger deserves recognition regardless of current form.

“He has scored 200 goals in England and played 82 international matches,” Van Persie added. “And that is regardless of whether you think he plays well or not. But I think the way we handle this as a footballing nation is really very bad.”

The Dutch coach’s comments reflected the esteem in which Sterling’s career achievements continue to be held by many within the game.
