Manchester City are continuing their preparations for another busy summer transfer window after reportedly agreeing a deal worth almost £22m to sign highly-rated Troyes youngster Mathys Detourbet.
While Pep Guardiola’s side remain fully focused on their push for silverware, including the FA Cup and the closing stages of the Premier League campaign, work behind the scenes has already intensified as City plan for the future.
Recruitment discussions have been ongoing long before the market officially opens, with the club once again targeting emerging young talent from across Europe.
Detourbet, who is just 19 years old, has attracted growing attention following an impressive campaign in France’s Ligue 2.
The midfielder has made 33 appearances this season for Troyes, showing maturity and consistency beyond his years.
His performances are believed to have convinced City officials that he is a player capable of developing into a future first-team option.
Initial reports last month suggested Manchester City had reached an agreement worth around £13m for the teenager. However, fresh details emerging from France now indicate the package is significantly higher than first thought.
According to RMC Sport journalist Fabrice Hawkins, the total agreement between the clubs stands at £21.7m once bonuses and additional clauses are included.
The deal would represent another sizeable investment from City in one of Europe’s promising young prospects.
Although the move appears close, Detourbet must still agree personal terms before the transfer can be fully completed. If everything progresses as expected, the midfielder is set to spend next season away from the Etihad Stadium.
Reports claim he would immediately join Monaco on loan for the 2026-27 campaign, with the possibility of the arrangement being extended for a further season.
Such a pathway has become increasingly common for young players signed by elite clubs, allowing them to gain valuable experience before stepping into one of the most competitive squads in European football.
City continue long-term recruitment strategy

Alongside signing established stars capable of competing for trophies instantly, the club have also invested heavily in younger players with the potential to develop over time.
The challenge for emerging talents at City, however, is clear. Breaking into Guardiola’s first team remains one of the toughest tasks in football. Even experienced internationals regularly find themselves competing for minutes in a squad packed with elite-level quality.
That reality means patience is likely to be required if Detourbet completes the move.
The teenager may have enjoyed a breakthrough season in Ligue 2, but City are not expected to place immediate pressure on him to feature regularly in England.
Instead, the club appear focused on shaping his development gradually, ensuring he gains further top-level experience before potentially becoming part of Guardiola’s plans.
