Guardiola confirms two key players ready to face Crystal Palace, plans to bench superstars

Pep Guardiola has confirmed that he might start two of his attacking players against Crystal Palace due to his plan to rotate the squad.

Having being relegated to the bench in recent months, both Omar Marmoush and Phil Foden pushing strongly for starting places during the closing weeks of the campaign.

City enter the final stretch of the season still competing on two fronts, with crucial Premier League matches against Palace, Bournemouth and Aston Villa still to come, while an FA Cup final against Chelsea at Wembley also awaits.

Guardiola’s side have been forced to navigate a demanding run of fixtures since February, with the City manager relying on a relatively settled group of players for much of that period.

Injuries and concerns over fatigue have limited opportunities for widespread rotation, but recent performances from Marmoush and Foden have handed Guardiola fresh options at a critical stage of the season.

Both players have made notable impacts from the bench in recent matches, increasing competition for attacking positions in a side already built around the presence of Erling Haaland.

Haaland remains City’s central attacking figure, yet Guardiola admitted the form of Marmoush in particular has complicated his team selection plans in a positive way.

Speaking after City’s 3-0 victory over Brentford on Saturday, Guardiola acknowledged the challenge of fitting his attacking players into the same line-up.

“Yeah especially Omar – it’s not easy because normally we play with just one striker, a proper striker – and Erling is there,” Guardiola said per City Xtra

“Erling is so important for us but the contribution of Omar always when he plays, the amount of goals, and the rate for minutes played is really good.”

Marmoush has impressed whenever called upon in recent weeks, offering energy, movement and a consistent goal threat despite limited starting opportunities.

His performances have added another dimension to City’s attack at a time when Guardiola is attempting to carefully manage workloads across several competitions.

Foden, meanwhile, continues to attract attention after Guardiola recently delivered an emotional tribute to the England international before the Brentford match.

The City manager has long regarded Foden as one of the club’s most influential players, and his return to form comes at a vital stage of the campaign.

Rotation key as City prepare for decisive fixtures

Guardiola made clear that changes to his starting line-up will become increasingly important over the coming weeks, particularly given the physical and mental demands placed on his players throughout the season.

The City manager has frequently spoken about the importance of maintaining intensity during decisive periods of a campaign, and with four major matches remaining, squad management is now central to his planning.

While City have benefited from consistency in selection during recent months, Guardiola acknowledged that continuing with the same players every few days could damage the team’s chances of finishing strongly.

“Top! I know it’s not easy for them, but I’m pretty sure in the next games they’re going to play,” Guardiola said when discussing the players waiting for opportunities from the bench.

“I’m going to rotate otherwise we cannot arrive finals or Bournemouth. We’ll see the result (of West Ham vs Arsenal, which eventually finished 0-1) and after, we’ll take decisions.”

The manager’s willingness to rotate could provide opportunities not only for Marmoush and Foden, but also for several fringe players hoping to make an impact before the campaign concludes.

City’s fixture list leaves little margin for error. Palace have proven difficult opponents for many of the Premier League’s leading sides this season, while Bournemouth and Aston Villa are both chasing strong finishes of their own.

Added to that is the pressure of an FA Cup final at Wembley, where Guardiola will be seeking another major trophy during his time in English football.
