Real Madrid and Bayern Munich make contact for Man City defender

Manchester City are preparing to begin discussions with defender Josko Gvardiol over a fresh long-term contract as interest in the Croatia international continues to grow across Europe.

Both Real Madrid and Bayern Munich are understood to have made enquiries about the 24-year-old’s situation at the Etihad Stadium after monitoring his impressive development under manager Pep Guardiola.

Gvardiol has become one of the most dependable figures in City’s defence since joining from RB Leipzig in 2023.

His performances at both centre-back and left-back have strengthened his importance within Guardiola’s squad, with the Premier League champions now keen to secure his long-term future.

The defender’s current contract runs until 2028, but City are eager to improve those terms as part of their wider plans for the squad.

Sporting director Hugo Viana has been reviewing the club’s long-term structure, with several key players expected to be tied down to new agreements.

Following progress in discussions surrounding Phil Foden and his future at the club, attention has now shifted towards ensuring Gvardiol remains central to City’s plans for the coming years.

According to TeamTalk, sources close to the situation suggest City are aware that Europe’s leading clubs are watching developments closely.

Real Madrid and Bayern Munich are both searching for additional quality on the left side of defence, and Gvardiol’s versatility has placed him high on their list of possible targets.

Madrid have continued to assess defensive options as they plan for the future, while Bayern are also looking to strengthen their back line with a player capable of operating comfortably in multiple positions.

Gvardiol’s calmness on the ball, tactical intelligence and physical presence have made him an attractive candidate for both clubs.

Despite the growing speculation, Manchester City remain confident about the player’s commitment to the club.

There is belief within the Premier League side that negotiations over a renewed contract will move smoothly once formal talks begin.

The Croatian international is expected to return before the closing stages of the domestic campaign and should still be available to join up with Croatia ahead of this summer’s World Cup finals.

Speaking before City’s meeting with Brentford, Guardiola addressed questions surrounding the defender’s future.

Guardiola said: “I have no info. I would love Gvardiol to stay here. It is not easy to find a player like him so hopefully he can stay.”

Those comments underline the value Guardiola places on the defender, who has grown into a key figure since his arrival from Germany.

His ability to contribute in different defensive roles has given City additional tactical flexibility, something Guardiola has repeatedly prioritised during his time in Manchester.
