Marc Guehi reacts to his costly error after racist and abuse comments

Marc Guehi has spoken publicly after a difficult moment in Manchester City’s dramatic 3-3 draw with Everton, acknowledging his role in a match that could yet prove significant in the context of the Premier League title race.

The encounter, played on Monday night, delivered both spectacle and tension in equal measure.

For long periods, City appeared in control, only for the contest to swing sharply following a defensive lapse that allowed Everton back into the game.

The result leaves City with ground to make up, now five points behind league leaders Arsenal, although they still have a game in hand that may yet shape the outcome of the season.

Costly moment in a chaotic contest

City’s performance began with authority, as they imposed themselves early and took the lead through a moment of quality from Jeremy Doku.

The winger’s curling effort in the first half reflected the visitors’ dominance and suggested they were on course for a routine victory.

However, football often turns on fine margins, and this match proved no exception. The pivotal moment arrived in the 68th minute, when Guehi’s attempted back-pass fell short of its intended target.

The under-hit ball placed goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma under immediate pressure, and Everton forward Thierno Barry reacted quickest, capitalising on the mistake to score.

What followed was a sudden and decisive shift in momentum. Energised by the equaliser, Everton surged forward with renewed belief.

Jake O’Brien soon added a second with a well-taken header, and Barry struck again to complete a rapid turnaround that left City reeling.

For a side with title ambitions, conceding three goals in such quick succession represented a significant setback.

Yet the response from City highlighted their resilience. Erling Haaland reduced the deficit to keep hopes alive, and deep into stoppage time, Doku produced another moment of brilliance to salvage a point.

Guehi responds and looks ahead

In the aftermath of the match, attention inevitably turned to the error that had shifted the course of the game.

For Guehi, who joined the club in January, it was a moment of disappointment in what has otherwise been a promising start to his City career.

Taking to social media the following day, the defender addressed supporters directly, offering a candid reflection on his performance.

“I need to do better, but we keep going & focused on the next. Thank you for your support as always! Thank you Jesus!” he wrote.

Meanwhile, his message came after the defender was racially abuse on the social media. According to report, some fans took to the social media to attack him for making such a costly error in a match that could be pivotal to City success this campaign.

Guehi’s response suggests a player intent on learning and improving, rather than dwelling on the fans’ reactions. In a squad filled with experience and quality, such an attitude is likely to be supported and encouraged.
