Thierry Henry has singled out Manchester City player as one of the most challenging players to contain in modern football, highlighting his growing influence at the club under the guidance of Pep Guardiola.
The former Arsenal forward, speaking to Betway, did not hold back in his admiration for the 21-year-old Nico O’Reilly, whose versatility and tactical intelligence have made him a key component in City’s system.
Henry’s comments reflect a wider recognition of O’Reilly’s rapid development and the unique qualities he brings to one of Europe’s most dominant sides.
A tactical weapon in Guardiola’s system
Henry’s praise centres not only on O’Reilly’s individual talent but also on how seamlessly he fits into Guardiola’s fluid tactical approach.
The Frenchman made it clear that his opinion of the youngster has been consistent for some time.
“I named him as one of the best young players in the Premier League a few months ago, so it’s clear what I think of him. Nico O’Reilly is a good player who can give you a lot of options.
“Tactically, especially with the way Pep Guardiola likes to play, he’s a dream come true for a coach. Playing on the inside, the outside, he has an eye for goal at the back post and he’s got an engine, so what’s not to like?”
Those words underline why O’Reilly has become such a valuable asset. His ability to operate across multiple positions allows Guardiola to maintain the unpredictability that has become a hallmark of City’s play.
Whether drifting into central areas, overlapping out wide, or arriving late in the box, the England international offers a constant threat.
Henry also pointed to the broader structure of City’s system, which enhances O’Reilly’s effectiveness and makes him even harder to contain.
“In Pep’s system at Man City, it’s very difficult to stop him because they interchange positions and they’re not rigid.
“They’re not predictable, and although sometimes you know what they’re going to do, you can’t stop it because the ball is moving so well. So O’Reilly is very difficult to stop, but in that system with the way they play.”
This fluidity, combined with O’Reilly’s energy and intelligence, ensures that opponents are often left chasing shadows. Even when teams anticipate City’s patterns, executing a plan to disrupt them is another matter entirely.
Versatility driving a breakout season
O’Reilly’s rise has been defined by his adaptability. Although he initially emerged as an attacking midfielder, Guardiola has deployed him in a variety of roles, including left-back, holding midfield, and a more advanced central position.

That positional flexibility has turned him into what many would describe as a modern, all-purpose footballer.
Such versatility has not come at the expense of productivity. Over the course of the current campaign, O’Reilly has contributed nine goals and seven assists in 49 appearances, a return that highlights both his attacking instincts and his consistency across competitions.
His performances have not gone unnoticed within the club either. Guardiola has already expressed confidence in O’Reilly’s chances of securing the PFA Young Player of the Year award, a view that is echoed by bookmakers who have installed him as the leading contender.
While teammates Rayan Cherki and Abdukodir Khusanov are also among the favourites, O’Reilly is widely regarded as the frontrunner.
His ability to influence games in multiple phases — from build-up play to final-third contributions — sets him apart in a competitive field.
