Manchester City booked their place in the Emirates FA Cup final with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Southampton, sealed by a stunning late strike from Nico González.
For long periods at Wembley, Manchester City appeared frustrated and short of their usual cutting edge, but they found a way through when it mattered most, overturning a late deficit to maintain their pursuit of silverware under Pep Guardiola.
Late drama turns the tie
The semi-final began with City asserting control, dominating possession and probing for openings, yet lacking the clinical touch that has defined much of their recent success.
Despite creating several promising moments, their finishing deserted them in the first half, which ended goalless.
Southampton adopted a disciplined and compact approach. They offered little in attack before the interval and rarely troubled City goalkeeper James Trafford, who was largely a spectator in the opening 45 minutes.
The pattern continued after the restart. Guardiola turned to his bench, introducing key players in an attempt to inject urgency and creativity into his side’s play.
City increased the tempo, but Southampton remained resilient, defending deep and waiting for an opportunity to strike on the break.
That chance arrived late in the match. With City pushing forward in search of a breakthrough, Southampton capitalised on a swift counter-attack.
The move caught City exposed, and the underdogs made no mistake, taking the lead with only minutes remaining and threatening a major upset.
For a brief moment, Wembley sensed a shock result. But City responded with the composure and determination of a side accustomed to high-stakes situations.
Their equaliser came through Jérémy Doku, whose effort took a decisive deflection, wrong-footing the goalkeeper and bringing City level.
With momentum now firmly on their side, City pressed forward again. The decisive moment came when González produced a strike of outstanding quality, unleashing a powerful shot from distance that flew into the net and completed the turnaround.
González reflects on decisive moment
Speaking after the match per City Xtra, González described the instinct and emotion behind his match-winning goal.
“I was waiting for the chance, and I had it, so I gave it everything, I shot with everything… and it went in!”
The midfielder, who has had limited playing time in recent weeks, also spoke about the significance of the moment on a personal level.
“It’s been a long time without playing and being here, being with this amazing stadium, with this atmosphere – it’s an amazing feeling!”
City’s victory capped what González described as a pivotal period for the club, with their season gaining renewed momentum across multiple competitions.
“It’s been a really important week, it’s been amazing, three wins, and we are alive in the league which was something that maybe one month ago we didn’t think we would arrive here with this chance.

“But it’s amazing to arrive in another final – this is my second season, and my second final in the Emirates FA Cup, and I hope we can win it!”
The result not only secured City’s place in another final but also underlined their consistency in the competition.
Guardiola’s side became the first team to reach the FA Cup final in consecutive seasons on four occasions, further cementing their dominance in English football’s domestic tournaments.
Their previous appearance at Wembley in the final ended in disappointment, as they were beaten by Crystal Palace. That defeat remains a point of motivation for a squad eager to ensure a different outcome this time.
Awaiting them in the final will be either Chelsea or Leeds United, with City aiming to translate their experience and quality into another major trophy.
