Pep Guardiola reveals what he told City players after beating Arsenal

Pep Guardiola delivered a blunt reminder to his Manchester City squad in the immediate aftermath of their hard-fought victory over Arsenal over the weekend.

City edged the contest 2-1 at the Etihad Stadium, a win that keeps their title ambitions firmly alive and continues a pattern of late-season surges under Guardiola.

Yet, while the home supporters celebrated what could prove to be a defining moment in the Premier League race, the mood inside the dressing room was notably more measured.

The City manager, known for his meticulous approach and relentless standards, quickly shifted attention away from the result itself and towards the broader context of the title race.

His message was concise but pointed, reflecting both the opportunity and the pressure that lie ahead.

Speaking after the match, Pep Guardiola revealed exactly what he told his players once the final whistle had blown and the immediate emotions had begun to settle.

“We talk immediately in the dressing room after the game: ‘Don’t lose focus'”, said Guardiola. “Arsenal is top of the league, right now would be champions.”

A win that changes little — for now

Although the victory over Arsenal was crucial, it did not alter the current standings at the top of the table.

Arsenal remain three points clear of Manchester City, underlining Guardiola’s insistence that the job is far from complete.

City do have a game in hand, a factor that could prove decisive in the coming weeks.

However, the fixture list offers little comfort. Their run-in is widely regarded as more demanding, with a higher volume of matches and tougher opponents still to come.

Even their next assignment carries uncertainty. A trip to Burnley presents an opportunity to close the gap, but depending on other results, City could still find themselves significantly behind before their next league outing away at Everton.

Such scenarios highlight the fine margins that define a title race at this stage of the season.

Guardiola’s reaction reflects an understanding shaped by experience. Having guided City through multiple title battles, he is acutely aware that momentum can shift quickly, and that emotional control is often as important as tactical execution.

Fine margins and the race to the finish

As the season enters its final phase, the physical and psychological demands intensify. Guardiola acknowledged this reality, pointing to the limited recovery time between matches and the need to carefully monitor both fitness and focus within the squad.

“The recovery is a lot less than the last few weeks, it is just a few days so that’s why you have to see how people recover emotionally and physically,” he explained.

“There are six games left and we know exactly what is going to happen when we get results or just in case we don’t.”

Those closing fixtures will test not only City’s depth but also their resilience. While the club has a proven track record in high-pressure situations, not every member of the current squad has experienced a tight title run-in.

This lack of shared experience could become a factor, particularly as the stakes rise with each passing week.

Guardiola, however, appears intent on bridging that gap through clear messaging and constant reinforcement of standards.

There are also immediate concerns on the personnel front. Influential midfielder Rodri, widely regarded as one of the team’s most consistent performers, is set to miss the upcoming trip to Burnley due to a groin injury.

His absence removes a key presence from the heart of midfield, placing additional responsibility on others to maintain balance and control.
