Manchester City return to Premier League duty on Sunday with renewed belief after a dramatic twist at the top of the table, as Arsenal’s surprise defeat to Bournemouth has opened a window—however narrow—for the Sky Blues to apply pressure.
Pep Guardiola’s side travel to face Chelsea knowing the equation remains difficult, but not impossible.
Despite Arsenal maintaining a healthy lead, the gap has offered City a psychological boost at a decisive stage of the campaign.
With a crucial clash against the league leaders still to come, the Cityzens are determined to stretch the race as far as it will go.
For goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, the situation is clear: City must embrace the tension rather than shy away from it.
“You feel it,” the keeper said.
“The destiny is no longer in our hands, but we will try to hang on until the end and put pressure on them but these two games for us [Chelsea and Arsenal] are important.
“It’s always going to be a complicated game [at Chelsea.
“It will be a difficult game because going there to play is never easy.
“We hope to get a great result because it’s very important for us for the title race.”
City’s recent progress in the FA Cup has added momentum to their season, and having already secured silverware in the Carabao Cup, they remain firmly in contention on multiple fronts.
Yet it is the Premier League—arguably the most demanding of all competitions—that continues to define their campaign.
City look to thrive under pressure
Arsenal’s slip has shifted the narrative, even if only slightly. While the north London club still hold a commanding advantage, their defeat has injected fresh intrigue into the title race.
For City, the objective is straightforward: win consistently and force their rivals into further errors.
The trip to Stamford Bridge represents the first of two pivotal fixtures highlighted by Donnarumma. Historically, encounters with Chelsea have rarely been straightforward, particularly away from home.
The Italian shot-stopper acknowledged as much, underlining the scale of the challenge ahead.
City’s strength in recent seasons has often been their ability to maintain composure during high-pressure moments.
This resilience has been evident again this term, with Donnarumma playing a central role. Since arriving from Paris Saint-Germain last summer, he has quickly established himself as a key figure in Guardiola’s system.
Guardiola’s influence proving decisive
Beyond individual performances, Donnarumma has been quick to credit the influence of Guardiola in shaping both his own development and the team’s collective mentality.
“I think until you live it, you will never understand,” Donnarumma said of working under Pep.
“Until you experience him, you can’t understand the importance he has and the effect he has on a team.
“Sometimes you are shocked, you are enchanted, sometimes to hear him speak, to prepare a game tactically.

“Every situation, the coach helps me. He helps me manage the moments of the game.
“Every game you have some difficulties that maybe in another game you don’t have.
“And on those situations the coach is very good at preparing for them, at managing them well.
“And I am very happy because he has helped me a lot.
“He has helped me a lot in many situations, on the pitch and off it, and I think both he and the team have been fundamental from the beginning.
“I am very lucky in my career to be coached by him.”
