Pep Guardiola has outlined what he believes will be the decisive factor if Manchester City are to overcome Liverpool in their highly anticipated FA Cup quarter-final clash at the Etihad Stadium.
The City manager, speaking ahead of Saturday’s encounter, made it clear that despite his side’s recent dominance in this fixture, there can be no room for complacency against an opponent he still regards as one of the most formidable forces in English football.
Guardiola’s team come into the tie in confident mood, buoyed by recent success and the possibility of adding further silverware before the season concludes.
City have already lifted the Carabao Cup this term after defeating Arsenal in last month’s final, a result that has provided both momentum and belief within the squad.
That triumph has reignited their ambitions of securing multiple trophies, with the FA Cup now firmly in their sights alongside ongoing domestic commitments.
Yet Guardiola was quick to shift focus away from past achievements, instead emphasizing the scale of the challenge posed by a Liverpool side managed by Arne Slot.
While results may not always have reflected their best form this season, Guardiola insisted that Liverpool’s quality remains unquestionable.
“They (have) been the biggest, biggest one (rival over the course of Guardiola’s time as Manchester City manager),” the Catalan said.
According to the City boss, the only way his side can defeat the Reds is to replicate their recent Wembley performance on Saturday.
“A top contender, top class players, all of them – and we have to perform in the level we did (against Arsenal) to reach the next step.”
For Guardiola, matches against Liverpool have long defined his tenure in English football. From intense title races to dramatic cup encounters, the rivalry has consistently produced high-quality contests, often decided by the smallest of margins.
Saturday’s meeting, though in a different competition, carries the same weight and expectation.

Manchester City’s recent record against Liverpool may offer encouragement. They have already completed a league double over their rivals this season in the Premier League, showcasing both tactical discipline and attacking efficiency across those encounters. However, Guardiola is wary of reading too much into those results.
Cup football, as he knows all too well, presents its own unique challenges. Momentum can shift quickly, and knockout ties often hinge on moments of individual brilliance or lapses in concentration.
Guardiola’s message to his players has therefore been simple: replicate the intensity and execution displayed in their Carabao Cup final victory.
That performance against Arsenal was, in Guardiola’s eyes, close to the standard required to navigate the closing stages of major competitions.
It combined defensive resilience with attacking precision—qualities that will be essential against a Liverpool side capable of punishing any weakness.
