Man City 2-0 Arsenal: Guardiola furious with Rayan Cherki despite Carabao Cup triumph

Manchester City secured silverware with a composed 2-0 victory over Arsenal in the Carabao Cup final, yet the result did not stop manager Pep Guardiola from showing visible frustration on the touchline.

Despite a match-winning display from young forward Nico O’Reilly, Guardiola’s reaction to a moment of individual expression from Rayan Cherki became one of the talking points of the evening.

City’s win was ultimately defined by a burst of quality in the second half, but the first period painted a different picture. Arsenal began the stronger side and looked more threatening in the early minutes.

Goalkeeper James Trafford was called into action quickly, producing an impressive save to deny Kai Havertz before reacting sharply to keep out a follow-up effort from Bukayo Saka. Those interventions ensured City remained level at a stage when Arsenal appeared more likely to take the lead.

For much of the opening half, clear chances were limited, and both sides struggled to impose themselves fully.

However, the tempo shifted noticeably after the break. City emerged with greater urgency and nearly capitalised immediately on a defensive lapse.

Arsenal goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga misjudged a situation outside his penalty area, leaving himself exposed. In attempting to recover, he brought down Jeremy Doku, though the presence of covering defenders spared him from a dismissal.

That moment seemed to energise City, who began to take control of the contest. Arsenal, by contrast, appeared intent on disrupting the rhythm and slowing proceedings.

Their resistance, however, was broken in unexpected fashion. A routine save slipped through Kepa’s grasp, gifting Nico O’Reilly a simple finish to put City ahead.

The goal shifted momentum decisively, and within minutes, O’Reilly struck again. This time, the finish was far from simple. Meeting a precise delivery from Matheus Nunes, the 21-year-old powered in a well-taken header to double City’s advantage. It was a clinical spell that effectively settled the contest and underlined his growing influence within Guardiola’s squad.

O’Reilly’s quickfire double proved to be the defining passage of the match. His awareness for the opening goal and technical quality for the second highlighted his all-round attacking ability.

At just 21, his composure on such a stage suggested a player capable of thriving under pressure.

Guardiola reacts to Cherki’s showboating

While the scoreline suggested a comfortable victory, Guardiola’s reaction to Rayan Cherki introduced an element of tension. With City already leading 2-0, the French attacker was seen performing keepy-uppies during open play, an act that drew immediate attention.

The cameras captured Guardiola shaking his head in clear disapproval, signalling his dissatisfaction with what he likely viewed as unnecessary showmanship.

For a manager known for his demand for discipline and focus, such moments can be seen as distractions, regardless of the scoreline.

Cherki’s flair contrasted sharply with Guardiola’s emphasis on control and efficiency. Even in a winning position, the City manager appeared intent on maintaining professionalism and avoiding any hint of complacency. His reaction underlined the standards he expects from his players, particularly in major finals.
