Trent Alexander-Arnold caught mocking Man City star moments after Real Madrid win

Real Madrid’s progress into the Champions League quarter-finals came with little resistance on Tuesday night, but the post-match talking point centred not on the scoreline, but on the actions of Trent Alexander-Arnold after the final whistle.

The Spanish side sealed a 2-1 victory at the Etihad Stadium to complete a commanding 5-1 aggregate triumph over Manchester City. Two goals from Vinicius Junior ensured that Real Madrid advanced comfortably.

The contest tilted heavily in the visitors’ favour early on when Bernardo Silva was dismissed inside 20 minutes, leaving City with a mountain to climb. From that point, Madrid controlled proceedings with composure, moving the ball efficiently and limiting any sustained pressure from Pep Guardiola’s side.

Yet, while the result itself was emphatic, it was an off-the-ball moment involving Alexander-Arnold and Jeremy Doku that quickly circulated online.

Cameras captured the England international appearing to mimic Doku’s distinctive dribbling style during a conversation with a team-mate, believed to be David Alaba, moments after the game had ended.

Although there is no confirmed audio of what was said, Alexander-Arnold’s gestures were widely interpreted as playful mockery of Doku’s approach on the wing.

The Belgian is known for his quick feet, rapid changes of direction and frequent feints — traits that appeared to be the subject of imitation.

Over the course of the second leg, Alexander-Arnold largely contained Doku’s threat. The City winger managed to dribble past him just once, a statistic that will have pleased the defender given their previous encounters.

Madrid’s defensive structure also played a role, often committing extra players to support Alexander-Arnold on that flank.

For the 27-year-old, it represented a reversal of fortunes. Doku had previously enjoyed success against him, most notably in a past Premier League meeting where the winger repeatedly beat his marker in one-on-one situations. This time, however, the balance shifted, and Alexander-Arnold appeared keen to savour that outcome.

The moment quickly gained traction on social media, dividing opinion among supporters. Some viewed the exchange as harmless banter, while others felt it was ill-judged given the broader context of their rivalry.

“The audacity to clown someone who made you the most dribbled player in Premier League history in one game is actually crazy,” read one comment reacting to the footage.

Another added: “Doku must be living rent-free in Trent’s head.”

There were also those who argued that the individual duel was more competitive than the numbers alone suggested. One supporter wrote: “This would have made sense if Doku didn’t create four chances from his wing, including the chance that led to the [Erling] Haaland goal.”

City left to regroup after difficult week

For Manchester City, the defeat compounded what has been a challenging period. Their Champions League exit followed a 1-1 draw against West Ham United at the weekend, a result that left them trailing the Premier League leaders by nine points.

With European ambitions now over, attention turns to domestic competitions. City still have opportunities to secure silverware, with a League Cup final looming and the FA Cup campaign ongoing, but the margin for error has narrowed considerably.
