Guardiola responds to Antoine Semenyo rumours ahead of January window

Pep Guardiola has offered a measured but revealing insight into what the Manchester City January transfer window could look like, as speculation grows around possible incomings and outgoings at the Etihad Stadium.

City approach the middle of the season once again in the thick of a title race, chasing a fifth league triumph in six years.

However, this campaign has carried a slightly different feel. The summer brought significant change behind the scenes and on the pitch, with the arrival of Hugo Viana as sporting director marking the beginning of a new phase in Guardiola’s long and successful tenure in Manchester.

The Portuguese executive wasted little time in stamping his authority on the squad. Seven players were recruited, while several high-profile exits were sanctioned, reshaping a group that had already achieved historic success.

Kevin De Bruyne, Kyle Walker, Ederson, Ilkay Gundogan, Scott Carson and James McAtee were all allowed to move on, decisions that underlined City’s willingness to refresh rather than cling to past glories.

Despite those changes, City remain firmly in contention at the top of the table. Going into Saturday’s lunchtime clash away at Nottingham Forest, Guardiola’s side sit just two points behind leaders Arsenal.

While the immediate focus remains on results, attention has inevitably turned to Manchester City January transfer window plan. City are not expected to mirror their busy summer, but there are signs that targeted moves could still be made if the right opportunity presents itself.

Semenyo interest gathers pace as City weigh attacking options

One of the most persistent names linked with City in recent weeks is Bournemouth forward Antoine Semenyo.

The Ghana international has impressed with his pace, power and versatility, attributes that have attracted interest from across the Premier League.

City’s recruitment team, led by Viana, have been keen to reduce their dependence on Erling Haaland for goals. While the Norwegian continues to deliver at an extraordinary rate, the club hierarchy recognise the need for greater attacking variety, particularly against teams that set up to stifle City’s central threat.

Semenyo’s profile fits that brief. Comfortable operating across the front line, he offers direct running, physical presence and a willingness to press from the front.

That combination has reportedly put City ahead of several rivals, including Manchester United, Tottenham, Liverpool and Chelsea, in the race for his signature.

Although no formal agreement has been reached between City and Bournemouth, Semenyo is understood to be open to the idea of working under Guardiola.

The appeal of joining a side competing regularly for major honours, coupled with the opportunity to develop under one of the game’s most decorated coaches, is said to have played a key role in his thinking.

Bournemouth, for their part, are protected by a release clause worth £65 million, which can be triggered during a specific window between January 1 and January 10.

City officials are expected to decide soon whether to activate that clause or attempt to negotiate a different structure with the south coast club.

Any move, however, would be carefully considered. Guardiola has often stressed the importance of balance within his squad, preferring quality and adaptability over sheer numbers.

That cautious approach has served City well in the past, and there is little appetite to disrupt harmony midway through a demanding season without good reason.

Speaking to the club’s official channels about the Manchester City January transfer window plan ahead of the trip to Nottingham Forest, Guardiola struck a realistic tone when asked about the upcoming window.

Rather than offering firm assurances or denials, he emphasised the unpredictable nature of January.

“Everything can happen,” he said.

The City manager then reflected on recent experience to underline his point.

“Last season, when we started it, I never could’ve expected going into the transfer window with four or five players (being signed) – we had (so many) players injured.”
