Man City superstar to return to training ahead of upcoming crucial match

Manchester City’s pursuit of Arsenal at the top of the Premier League has been handed a timely lift, with encouraging Ruben Dias and Jeremy Doku’s injury updates on two key players easing some of the pressure on Pep Guardiola’s stretched squad.

As the season enters a decisive phase across multiple competitions, the return of important figures could shape how City navigate the title run-in.

Dias, a cornerstone of City’s defence, is edging closer to full fitness and is expected to rejoin training next week.

His recovery timeline raises the possibility of involvement as early as next Sunday’s clash with Liverpool, a fixture that could have a major bearing on the direction of the title race.

There was also positive news regarding winger Jeremy Doku, whose recent injury scare initially threatened to disrupt City’s attacking rhythm.

Defensive leader close to return as City steady themselves

Ruben Dias has been sidelined during a period in which City have had to reshuffle at the back, often relying on makeshift solutions and younger players to maintain their standards.

His anticipated return is therefore more than just a routine fitness update; it represents the reintroduction of leadership, authority and calm in a defence that thrives on organisation and communication.

The Portugal international has been a key figure since arriving at the Etihad Stadium, and his importance is often most apparent when he is absent.

City’s ability to control games from the back, squeeze opponents high up the pitch and dominate possession is closely linked to Dias’ presence.

His recovery offers Guardiola greater tactical flexibility ahead of a demanding sequence of matches domestically and in Europe.

At the same time, attention has also been on Doku, whose season has been disrupted by injury setbacks just as he was beginning to make a decisive impact.

The Belgian winger had produced flashes of his explosive potential earlier in the campaign, but both Ruben Dias and Jeremy Doku’s injury and fitness issues have limited their opportunities to build momentum.

Doku’s return to the starting line-up in midweek’s Champions League win over Galatasaray was therefore significant.

He immediately underlined his value by providing two assists, showcasing his pace, directness and ability to unsettle defenders.

However, his night ended prematurely when he was forced off in the first half with another injury concern, prompting understandable anxiety over a possible extended absence.

Pep Lijnders, stepping in for Guardiola on media duties, was keen to highlight Doku’s contribution and resilience, offering insight into both his performance and his injury situation.

“First of all for Jeremy, I have to make a big compliment of how he played. A top team is defined by the individual quality of our form players and how he was constantly available between the lines and to attack, the first assist to Erling was unbelievable,” said Lijnders. “Sorry that he went out but now we look.

“It’s a similar injury to the last one, at that time it was on the lateral side and now it’s in the centre. The last one took 18 days, I presume this will be a little shorter. We have to take time but Jeremy is a robust player.”

Title race experience shapes City’s mindset

Beyond the immediate injury news, Lijnders’ comments also reflected a broader understanding of what it takes to compete in an elite-level title race.

Having spent years alongside Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool, he is well versed in the fine margins that often define Premier League championships, particularly when Manchester City are involved.

During his time at Anfield, Liverpool amassed extraordinary points totals of 92 and 97 in separate seasons, yet still finished second to City.

Those campaigns underlined just how relentless the standards must be to stay in contention, and that experience is now informing City’s approach as they attempt to close the gap on Arsenal.

This season’s race may look different on paper. Arsenal have shown signs of vulnerability in recent weeks, raising the prospect that the title could be won with a lower points tally than in previous years.

Even so, Lijnders and those around him are under no illusions about the consistency required to overhaul a rival of Arsenal’s quality.

“It’s about us. I’ve been in a few titles race, it’s always about just focusing on the next game,” he said.
