At the Stadium of Light, Ake’s performance offered a reminder of what he brings when called upon. City faced a stern test at a ground where away wins have been rare this season, and the Dutchman’s reading of the game proved crucial as the Sky Blues navigated long spells without control.
There was even a scare early on, when he twisted his knee in the third minute, but Ake played through the discomfort to complete the full 90 minutes.
“I twisted my knee and felt something weird the whole game actually every time I passed,” he said.
“We’ll see but I think if you can carry on for 90 minutes it should be fine.” It was a small snapshot of his professionalism: no fuss, no excuses, just getting on with the job.
Yet performances like that also sharpen the dilemma. When a player shows he can still deliver at the highest level, the desire to do so regularly becomes harder to suppress.

Still, Ake admits that patience has limits. “The only thing I can say is I keep fighting every time. You want to play every game, I’m not going to say I should play every game because Ruben, Josko, Nico [O’Reilly] and the whole defence have been doing fantastic but every player wants to get minutes so the only thing I can do is fight and try to get opportunities like today and we will see in the future what happens.”
